2ch setup results

As some of you have read through some of the posting I have done of late that I have been in the process of putting together a 2ch setup for the living room. For those that may not have read those threads, here is the list of components used:

Amp Integra ADM 2.1
EQ Teac MKII 10
Transport Squeezebox 3 (Classic)
Speakers Fluance SX (Fronts)
Cables AR PR 131 interconnects
(From SB to EQ)
Velocity 45370 solid core (From EQ to Amp)

All I can say is my mouth fell open when I first fired it up the sound was very very clean and detailed, I used a 320Kps classical file. What caught me off guard was the depth of the bass, tight and precise. I then play one of the new Steely Dan albums I just got in and even more wow. It could be that I have been listening to bookshelf speakers for the last decade, but I have subs with those setups. The sound is clear, detail and warm all in one. Some have said these Fluance speakers will need time to break in, but if they get any better I don't know what else could be said. I'm sure the EQ has made a difference with this initial response. These are no concert level playing speakers, but for a listening room, or background music they will have people turning heads and asking questions about them. Here is a pic

I've wondered how good Fluance is, they sure are reasonably priced. Just curious if you've compared the sound without the EQ? I'm sure the tweaking may be likeable but what about the noise floor?

I got fairly lucky on that, I had preset the EQ band from past experience for hard surfaces and nailed it. I get no echo or odd resonance from the bass. It total caught me off guard. I'm not real interest in doing comparison testing at this time, just happy with the results. Maybe down the road when I'm bored I may tinker with it and do some EQ in and out/pre and post sound test.

I used each source that I use with the Squeezebox; Pandora, Last Fm and my own ripped albums and each sounded very good. The depth of the bass was the most surprising part. For the price I can not complain one bit, and I have read others reviews that these are on par with speakers in the $500-800 dollar range. For first time HT setup I could recommend these. And like I said above these fronts look good and sound good and hold their own with average to mid range 2ch systems, can't speak for the rest of the product line but I got a great deal on these.

Lovin this setup recoveryone. I've never heard Fluance before but i sure as hell like the looks of those.

thanks, just really glad to see that the $ amount does not always mean the best, but I believe in the most bang for my bucks. I spent less than $200 putting this together;

Seriously you can't go wrong for $80. If they sound good then it's a win. I bought a set of $40 speakers in South Korea - and I loved them - for the life of me I can't remember the name of them. They were standmounts with a double 4 inch woofer - Isobarik and had a built in power amp. For the price they were ridiculously good - you could actually listen to them without wanting to stick a fork in your ear. And the wood finish looked not bad to boot.

Damn it's going to bug me all night now trying to remember the name of them.

The above is a link to my blog where I talk about speakers and mainly speaker designs. The thing about speaker designs is that they can radically affect the sound that you receive. In the case of your floor standing Fluance model your own, I did go to their site but I meant to look at the impedance. If the impedance is 6-8 ohms, I would hope that they used twi 12 to 16 ohm speakers in parallel. If the impedance is 4 ohms I would hope that they used two 8 ohm speakers in parallel. The fluance design is close to the Radio Shack T100 system made many years ago. I can vouch that they used two 16 ohm 8 inch speakers in parallel. I like the Fluance design you present in your picture and probably redenders rather good 2 channel sound as you state. I have read over the years that when two woofers are used in parallel that distortion is reduced because two speakers are sharing the power load from a amplifier. In the case of the T-100s, I made a passive surround system for the owners using one 16 ohm speaker in a cabinet in the back of their room because they had a caddy corner set-up. The circuit sounded great and when you fool around with various passive circuits you can get some very interesting results. In this case when I played THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK on vhs-hifi, I could feel the spaceships whizzing by me on my sides as if there were side phantom speakers which was a terrific surround effect. The cost was a cheap speaker from a thrift store that met my requirements for that rear speaker and some 18 gauge wire. The people I did this for found it amazing to listen too. If I owned the two Fluance units you have I would probably try to do this today if my room was the type I could do this in. Passive circuits handle music generally very well and if a recording is such that the instruments were placed in such a way that they could reproduce themselves anywhere in space(and many recordings do this) you could have one nice ambience recovery system.

Slobber... I wish I had the room for a dedicated 2 channel hookup. Looks great man. Fluance has come a LOOOOONNNGGG way in the 12 years or so I been in this hobby. They, like others, have upped their game. I've never bought new speakers unless they were specialties like center channels or subwoofers, vintage for me. But I've seen/had a lot worse hook-ups than yours... Enjoy...
