reciever question
is there any advantage to hooking up my dvd player and vcr player to my receiver other then convenience? is there any improved picture quality, or sound quality?

If you're talking about for audio, there is a huge advantage. presumably the speakers attached to your receiver are much better than those inside your TV, so your sound will be that much greater. You should do it, you'll be happy.

If I may take a slightly different approach on this question, I think what he means is will he get a better picture if he routes his vcr and dvd player through the receiver.
The general consensus of the board has always been to route your dvd player directly to your tv. Going thru the receiver is just one more piece of gear to degrate the quality.

cmo,
Hook up the video output to the tv and the audio output to the receiver. Best of both worlds.

Of course. I just reread my answer and I apologize for not being more clear.
