I really like Shirley's "I Remember Miles" CD.

    Give it a listen-

Frenchmon, Vocal Jazz is a match made in heaven with tubes and Magnepans. It has that great synergy just like acoustic music has.

Oh I have listened to"I Remember Miles".

Here are my two favorite Shirley Horn recordings. And they are not her albums, but she really shines on both. If you can, treat yourself to both of these..... These are outstanding CD's.

Both of these CD's are really outstanding.

IF you know anything about Golson and Haden, then you know they are truly in that "last of the great ones" still living today.

Thanks...I have been meaning to get that one. I like all the Quartet West stuff. I think they are very much underrated. And that Ernie Watts is something on that sax...especially to see him live is a real treat.

COMPLETELY disagree. PB has more soul than 95% of female jazz singers. She actually feels the lyrics. IMO, Ella has great tone, but NO SOUL!

tube fan...you want soul? Try some Billy Holiday. Boy you get inside her world and you get soul down in your bones! Oh...and Ella had soul....you just couldn't feel it because you cant feel her generation in which she lived in.

I definitely agree with Cassandra Wilson but I can't agree with Sophie Milman having more soul. She's a nice singer and has a great band, I saw them play here in the Twin Cities.

Ella was mostly "up beat" in her demeanor and very sweet and kind....but she had pain and sorrow. She was sexually abused and very poor as a child and mocked for her looks. Even as a young adult just breaking into the music scene after winning at the Apollo Theater, was mocked and called an Ugly Duckling by Chick Webb, who latter came to lover her. But she did show emotion and feel her songs. You watch some of her stuff on You tube.....Ella fitzgerald - Mack The Knife High quality - YouTube
Man she is feeling it! ....And so can I!!!

I'm coming to the party late here but Patrica is unique and unusual. Her covers are very good and I've really enjoyed her talents. I wouldn't have her every night but when I want to settle down for that kind of music, she is a go to along with several of the mentioned artists in this thread.
    Constantinople, Patricia Barber - YouTube
This is a favorite of mine as the musicians are tight.

Could it be you miss all the histrionics many singers unnecessarily add to their performances. Those histrionics are why I don't like Patti Labelle that much.

Ella didn't need that. Those present when she won amateur night certainly wouldn't vote for a singer who didn't project a lot of emotion. You couldn't win anything at the Apollo amateur night competition unless you could communicate emotion.

All this talk of souls you might make me religious yet - err nope.

This is somewhat silly since soul I suspect seems associated with a vocal range half or one octave lower than a Sophie Milman who has an easy breezy and "airy" voice. Unlike the slow methodical deeper voice that Barber and some others possess. Barber comes off calculating to me - same for Krall - the only album I really liked was the worst recorded one This song was from that album the name of which escapes me Diana Krall, departure bay - YouTube

Besides that problem I can't seem to find songs that both of them sing to be able to make a comparison. The artist may do one cover better than someone else does another cover - I dislike comparisons of covers most of the time - so long as they bring something interesting to the cover I'll probably be on board with it.

I tried barber again - listened to a bunch of youtubes and I keep having the feeling like I want to fall asleep - it's background music at Starbucks - so whatever supposed Soul she has isn't getting through to me. She sounds like she is forcing "soul" on me and I just don't buy it. To me her music comes off as pretentious.

But the musicianship is first class
