Need help in making choice

I was in harvey,s electronics this week in new york city I was shopping
for and intergrated amp but the sales person said since I listen to a
lot of radio I should by a stereo reciever instead.I was going to buy a
separate radio tuner with the integrated amp any suggestions

first of all, STAY AWAY FROM THE "ELECTRONICS" DEALERS...

sorry for the caps, but take a trip to a dedicated audio, or audio video shop, they won't tell you what you want, they'll help you pick something that suits your needs, or just give you information on the products you like..

bring a pen and pad of paper, write down all the products the sales guy mentions, then search it online, and post it here!

We need much more information: roomsize, speakers, current hardware, price range, that kinda jazz, detailed as possible!

...the record straight...Harvey's is probably the oldest existing A/V retailer/consultant/installation specialist in the NYC area...I actually ordered an S-VHS recorder from them just yesterday at their Greenvale location...they don't sell refrigerators and Palm Pilots.

Integrated? Excellent for a building-block approach if chosen carefully. Reciever? Feature-laden, nice, neat package. It depends...Just two-channel music reproduction? Planning on multi channel or HT?

In addition to their recievers, Marantz and Yamaha have integrateds and tuners...Denon also, however their prices rise dramatically...Onkyo, HK are strictly recievers...

I second what Resident Loser said. Harvey's is not a mass market "electronics" dealer despite the name. They are a high-end audio/video speciality store that goes back several generations. Originally also known as Harvey Radio.

System building for 2-2.5K. Wow, you will have lots of options. "The Outlaw Receiver looks very interesting. Also it leaves a good budget for speakers.

Here's something to consider. If you are passionate about good classical and jazz on FM, consider spending up to 500.00 for a good used analog tuner like a Magnum Dynalab 101 or 90 model. In the long run you will not regret it. With good revealing speakers and a decent amplifier or integrated amlifier, it would be a step up in audio performance over most reciever tuners in general. We listen to a lot of FM and have not regretted this purchase. good luck

Is this a music only stereo system? If so, I think the integrated amp/seperate tuner route would be a good way to go. With your budget, you can include some very good tubed integrateds on your list of amps to consider w/plenty left over for speakers. You won't need a lot of power for your room size.

I think the Magnum Dynalab tuner suggestion is a good one.

If you want to try more than one tuner, you can pick up several used tuners for the price of one new one and probably get better performance. Spend some time at www.fmtunerinfo.com and see if any of the ones they mention interest you.

Why do people always think that there is 1 and only 1 solution in all scenarios? There are multiple routes that can be taken when it comes to HT and Audio. Some ways are better than others, but you can achieve various things going different ways. It's much more important in my mind to try various options and then go for what suits you in both price and performance.
