Harmon Kardon Stereo reciever volume knob?

I have a Stereo reciever from 92' and hardly used. It's ben sitting and has a little dust on it. The problem I having is, the volume is fine and only works at very low, approx 1/4 of the way or less.
As soon as I go beyond that point it , theres no sound, it immediatly goes dead. If i let it sit for a few seconds it may come on with sound for a fraction of a second, then dead.
Does anyone know what this is , and can I fix it??
    Thanks so much
    Tim

seems like its happening just when using head phones, I just hooked up one speaker and its working well. I'll have to hook up a full set (2 speaks) and check again.
I'm guesing if its happening with head phones, its in the head phone jack or head phone plug??? could I be right?
    Thanks

    Try

squirting a little electrical contact cleaner into the headphone socket and then plug in fully and unplug the headphones several times. Could be dirt or a little bit of corrosion. I had a similar problem a while back with an amp that had not been used for a while.
