Dolby Digital 2.0 means that there are two discrete channels of audio information. When your receiver is in a surround mode it likely processes two channel material in a Pro Logic type matrix. If the information in both channels is the same (mono source) then the matrix processing will combine them both and send all information to the center channel speaker. If you take your receiver out of surround mode, you should hear audio from both front speakers.

You should also be able to activate one of the receiver's "DSP" modes(surround processing modes) and get full surround sound(all speakers active) from 1.0 or 2.0 source material. The quality of this "surround sound" will vary quite a bit depending on the quality of the receiver though.
