    5.1 analog vs Digital coaxial

Is there a rule of thumb about the difference between using Analog 5.1 outs from dvd player and running them through Analog 5.1 ins on the HT receiver versus using the Digital coaxial out on the dvd player and the Digital coaxial in on the HT receiver? Does one offer better sound quality? Does it depend on the type of DAC used in the DVD player? Any advantages/disadvantages for one or the other?
