Decent deal, but isn't that the older, discontinued model?

I don't know. But, it's half the price of the same models.

Used to be around before the internet.
It died out because nobody could figure out a way for it to deliver porn.:1:

I put in a new HU last year that featured HD radio (Dual XHD7714) This unit came with more bells and whistle than you can shake a stick at. The HD radio was an after thought when making my choice, but it has a nice niche. Many stations have a sub HD signal that they put out and some even broadcast it without commercials. The sound quality is like going from Stereo to DDPL. I live in an area that promotes this format on some stations while others keep it a secret. If I drove more often, I would really enjoy this, but my commute is only 10min and I listen to my Mp3's and CD more often than radio. I think if XM and Cirrus didn't try to flood the market HD radio would be the standard just as HDTV is today with a little help from the FCC.

i went with the sangean early on
for $160 and it delivers the station i want-kkjz-88.1-in the LA area nicely. i have a fortunate look at signal hill so i am home free. the regular tuner (cheeeep fisher rack mount) worked fine except for atmospheric disturbances. the hd has none of that. my reception area doesnt let me take advantage of many of the LA stations but i mostly listen to the jazz on kkjz so i am fine with that.

the new one has digital out so you can use an outboard d/a which can be a real benefit.

I've been wondering about that, because the sound of HD radio, by most accounts, is not that impressive. But I'm not listening to HD radio right now, so I really can't say.

I have to differ on that note, I have listen to few stations in HD and its a much clearer sound. To me its was like going from stereo to DPL. :0:

So then what will a DAC add to it? I'm wondering because even if HD is an improvement, can a DAC improve it that much more?

    a better dac
for a digital feed would result in the same thing as a better dac for a cd player. better sound. my sangean doesnt have that option. however, a friend ran his cable box to a dac and it sounded WONDERFUL.
