Any list of shocking films without "Caligula" or "The Exorcist" isn't much of a list if you ask me.

As far as "most controversial" goes, I cannot disagree with Salo as #1. I spent some time from 94 to 97 researching European movies from the 60s and 70s. From what I read about Salo, I decided not to get it even though each of my 2 main sources had it. (Some things shouldn't seep into an already fragile mind.) Pasolini was murdered mainly for making this film.

Yeah, I would've thought that Caligula would make a list of controversial movies. Also, I Spit On Your Grave was controversial enough to get banned in several countries. And as far as controversial comedies go, I would've nominated any number of John Waters movies, particularly Pink Flamingos, before Life of Brian.

Man they're running out of things to make lists over.
Natural Born Killers was not particularly insightful -- though I guess controversial must be the number of theaters that banned it -- but I don;t recall any of that. One would think that "A Clockwork Orange" which was rated X for decades in the UK would have made the cut here instead.
Crash is not controversial in my view --- it's soft core shick porn disguised as an art film. I suppose that is enough t make it controversial -- to me it just makes it bad -- especially if it isn't even going to do the soft core porn part well.
The Exorcist created a lot of outrage at the time -- and tough to argue against it.
And like him or not -- Michael Moore' Fahrenheit 9-11 certainly caused controversy. I chose it over Bowling for Columbine merely because it reached a much larger audience in theatrical release. Fahrenheit 9-11 actually inspired the right to make counter propaganda films as well as book's attacking Moore. How many other films on the list can say that!

Nekromantik didn't make the list?
And any list about "controversy" had better include Star Wars: Episode 4-6 special editions.
