Roger Ebert's Best 10 Movies of 2005

I don't think these movies are any particular order.

1. Crash: Paul Haggis' film, written with Robert Moresco, uses interlocking stories to show we are in the same boat, that prejudice flows freely from one ethnic group to another.



2. Syriana: There is less oil than the world requires, and that will make some rich and others dead, unless we all die first.


3. Munich: The film is not critical of Israel, as some believe, but a more general mourning for the loss of idealism in a region marching steadily toward terrorism and anarchy.


4. Junebug: The story, written by Angus MacLachlan, involves Alessandro Nivola and Embeth Davidtz as Chicagoans who return to North Carolina to visit his family.


5. Brokeback Mountain: Two cowboys in Wyoming discover to their surprise that they love each other. They have no way to deal with that fact.


6. Me and You and Everyone We Know: It's a comedy about falling in love with someone who speaks your rare emotional language of playfulness and daring, of playful mind games and bold challenges.


7. Nine Lives: Rodrigo Garcia's film involves nine stories told in a total of nine shots.


8. King Kong: A stupendous cliffhanger, a glorious adventure, a shameless celebration of every single resource of the blockbuster, told in a film of visual beauty and surprising emotional impact.


9. Yes: Their sex is eager and makes them laugh. They are not young; they are grateful because of long experience with what can go wrong.


10. Millions: Nine-year-old Anthony Cunningham and his 7-year-old brother, Damian (Lewis McGibbon and Alex Etel) find a bag containing loot that bounced off a train and is currently stuffed under their bed.

just as an fyi but the nine lives poster isnt the same as the actual movie roger ebert was referencing. that one is with robin wright penn and other actual actors, not paris hilton and co. didnt know there were two movies with the same name out, but they couldnt be more different. c'mon smokey, you didnt actually think ebert would put a movie with paris hilton in it as his top ten? or anyone else who actually appreciates movies would either, haha.

OMG, thank you for clearing that up, Kam. The world can resume spinning now. The only acclaimed movie Paris Hilton has been in was green and she looked like a racoon in the headlights.

Unfortunately, I've only seen Crash from that list, and it was absolutely terrific! I still need to see Kong, Munich, and Syriana. The others aren't my style.

There's a few on that list that I've never heard of, but I'm dying to see Munich and Brokeback Mountain. Junebug looks intriguing too.

it's been pushed back to another page, but if you can find it, i did a review on crash back when it came out. Crash, of course, didnt get a mega wide release nor a huge publicity push. probably because its a great movie. hence the lovely paradox of saturating the market so 100% of the population knows everything about Dukes of Hazzard being released, but barely anyone has even heard of Crash, one of the best movies of the year. i LOVED this movie. i thought it was phenomenal and probably among my top 5 easy of the year. highly reccomended. ebert's review of it is spot on too i'd say if you look that one up, although he gives away a lot of the storylines and i, generally, prefer to go into a movie knowing as little as possible.

Topspeed, Crash is good you say? I haven't heard much about it.

Crash is simply brilliant! Along with Kam, I'd easily put this movie in my Top 3 for last year. The way the stories intertwine is very clever and it takes a poignant look at the ethnic soup that is Los Angeles. Lot's of "Oh My God!" moments in there, too. I don't want to give it away, so I'll just say that I heartily recommend it.

I actually got pretty lucky on Sunday as I finally got to see Million Dollar Baby (HBO HD) and then followed it up that night with Crash. I can't even remember a day where I was lucky enough to watch two amazing movies in a row. There's usually one that's painfully mediocre or a pure stinker . Baby solidifies Eastwood's rep in my mind as a genius. Too bad about Swank's marriage, but you had to wonder how long her actor-hubby would be able to deal with her two Oscars while he toils away with bit parts on the tele. Personally, I'd love it if my wife were more successful than me. It'd give me more time to pore over Lost recordings !

Geez, I just remembered: I need to reset my TiVO to start at 8:00pm tomorrow instead of 9:00 (or does it automatically do that for you when you set Season Pass to record a particular show?)

It was posted to members of a list serve I'm on. The member that sent it got it from americanidle.net. I'm not affiliated with the site and just recently became aware of it. I find the stuff amusing. I try to avoid being too political here except on the off topic discussion board, but I thought anyone could appreciate the humor no matter what their political persuasion.
