No surprise...
There were probably 75 just in this past year...sure, they may not have been "called" a sequel or remake, but essentially they copied all their ideas from somewhere. I love how 2 scripts of similar movies always seem to land right around the same exact time....
THE PRESTIGE vs. THE ILLUSIONIST
THE MATRIX vs. BLADE (yes, if you actually think about it these two movies have more in common than meets the eye)
DEEP IMPACT vs. ARMAGEDDON
ANTZ vs. BUGS LIFE
TRUMAN SHOW vs. EDTV
MISSION TO MARS vs. RED PLANET
TOMBSTONE vs. WYATT EARP
DEEP STAR SIX vs. THE ABYSS
VICE VERSA vs. LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
and the list goes on....

Chances are....
Just about every movie currently being made, was in one shape, way or form already made by one of the following men:
Akira Kurosawa
Alfred Hitchcock
Billy Wilder
Charlie Chaplin
John Ford
or Stanley Kubrick

Can't wait for the Alien prequels... I really hope Ridley Scott directs them.

For a few of those, and quite a few others not listed, you can attribute those to Dreamworks' (aka Katzenburg's) war with Disney. Just take a gander from when Dreamworks started and their first several YEARS of releases, coinciding with what the Disney family was putting out. Coincidence?
And they say Katzenburg was happy with the severance Disney gave him...

Footloose? FOOTLOOSE? That one hurts. I love the original! It's so silly and fun. They'll probably cast some little Vampire wannabe or HS Musical twerp in Kevin Bacon's role. I may have to make sure that my nieces see the original before they have the chance to be tainted by this sacreligious remake.
Dan Akroyd's been talking about a Ghostbuster remake for years, so that's no surprise.
A new Heavy Metal movie could be very cool if done right. Given that the original was in 1981 and would have likely been all hand-drawn animation, it would be very interesting to see just to compare animation technique. Not to mention the potential for a killer soundtrack!
But the one that truly makes me scratch my head in wonder is Yellow Submarine? How on earth can you remake a Beatles movie and expect success? That has to be stupidity at it's finest.
Edit: I was just looking at Heavy Metal on IMDB. I never realized that many of the voices were SCTV cast.

Hopefully he doesn't have to make change for the meter at the studio.
What a horrific list ranging from films that cannot possibly be bettered to films that should have never been made. How are you gonna make The Crow or Highlander or Escape from New York better. All owe their rather cult-like status to the "doing-more-with-less" ethos.
Do we really need another rendition of Cliffhanger? Seriously?

everyone panned Clash Of The Titans last year, as if the original wasn't an embarissment for everyone involved.
some sequels are long overdue, like Heavy Metal II and Tron. They could be fun. I have fond memories of movies like Tron and Black Hole (even if the latter was a snooze, it was visually stunning for its time) because they were reasons to take families to the movies beyond the usual glorified TV cartoons and dog/cat shows that passed for family fare (and still do). They were a leap forward for Disney Co. For better or worse, spectacle is still the best reason for "seeing it on the big screen".
