Well it seems that the writers of Lost got most of their material from watching a few episodes of Mysteries of the Universe back in the 80's. That and a healthy helping of Jules Verne's Mysterious Island.

It's been a long time since I read Verne's book but I don't see a connection...other than both Lost and Mysterious Island have mysterious islands in them.

I have no memory whatsoever of that show, but are you telling me "Lost" has morphed itself into some kind of X-Files clone? I thought it was a show about some people who crash-landed on a spooky island.

Nope, never was....all kinds of weird, wild stuff started happening on the island. Not X-Files-y story wise, but maybe sharing some similar weirdness. Far more continuity and forward thinking in Lost though. Better eye-candy too.

You know Rich, from everything that I know about you I really think that you'd like this show. You should watch the DVDs. The plane crash is really incidental to the rest of the story. The story is about the island, not the crash.

FA, unfortunately, the discussion here is for people who keep up with the show on TV, and I'd rather watch it on DVD (sans commercials and 2-3 episodes at a time). But yes, I have a lot of thoughts on the show.

Regarding the book, there's a whole lot more there, including some really interesting developments that later happened on the show. Not to spoil anything, but there is also a submarine in the book, owned by a millionaire renegade hero/dictator type.... Anyhow, I'm a big Jules Verne fan and I read most of his books as well as others like it: Wells, Dumas, Tolkien, Swift, Grimm, Stoker and whatever else terrifying or futuristic I could get my hands on. Our teachers didn't allow us to read modern Sci-Fi when I was in school, only the classics, so we read what we could get our hands on. We even had secret identities, secret codes (in case our messages got intercepted by the Molochs - what we called the teachers - but that's a whole other story) and our own secret society meetings in the attic... Good times, good times.

I can see how joining in a discussion would be difficult when you're a season (or two) behind. Even if we tried to discuss it back to season four, questions that you're asking might be something that I have answers to and I wouldn't want to accidently give anything away.

It's too bad. I'd like to hear some of your theories.
