Flags of Our Fathers vs Letters From Iwo Jima?

I read the book (Flags of Our Fathers) but have not seen the movie or Letters From Iwo Jima. I noticed that Letters has several Oscar nominations while Flags only had one or two.

Has anyone seen both and can comment, compare, contrast them?
