Just watched a pair of excellent documentaries about modern China.

China Blue records conditions inside a denim factory near Canton, where many unwanted female children from the rural provinces migrate to work in squalid conditions for long hours and little pay. The film is shot on the sly, which leaves little room for cinematic style, but the substance is eye-opening.

Please Vote For Me chronicles the election for third-grade Class Monitor in an elementary school in Wuhan province. It's riotously funny but also contains some pretty revealing commentary about the concept of "democracy" from the 8-year-olds participating.

Both are worth tracking down if you can find them!
