Progressive means each scanned line one after the other.
In TV production and reproduction at home, a picture frame is scanned twice, 2 frames. First, odd lines of the total 525 lines in NTSC system is scanned then the even lines. the two fields are interlaced and the eye sees one frame.

In a computer it was decided to do it differently. Every line is scanned in sequence, twice, progressively

Now your TV needs to have the capability to do progressive scanning but the DVD player should do both format if you don't have such a TV now. You can still buy one for the next TV
