Progressive means each scanned line one after the other.
In TV production and reproduction at home, a picture frame is scanned twice, 2 frames. First, odd lines of the total 525 lines in NTSC system is scanned then the even lines. the two fields are interlaced and the eye sees one frame.

In a computer it was decided to do it differently. Every line is scanned in sequence, twice, progressively:)

Now your TV needs to have the capability to do progressive scanning but the DVD player should do both format if you don't have such a TV now. You can still buy one for the next TV :)
