How to connect pc to receiver

Is what I want to do, even recommended? I have alot of tunes on my pc, and I would like to be able to play them on my stereo speakers that are located in the living room. (which I'm looking to upgrade).

My pc is jacked up. It's the dell XPS machine with the best of the best, so should be able to handle any digital sound issues.

What I don't know is if it's possible to connect my pc to my reciever so I can play my music from the pc to the stereo, and if so, what kind of cable do I need to run from the pc to the reciever? I also want to be able to play sound on the pc for games, and tunes if I so choose that won't be directed to the reciever.

What sound card is installed in your PC ? It most likely has 1/8" mini-jack sockets in which case you will need a stereo 1/8" mini-jack to RCA adapter such as this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search
Connect a set of shielded cables of suitable length between the adapter and your receiver. I use the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card which is very good and has gold-plated RCA analog and digital outs. It can be found online for about $100.00

I use one of these overpriced but handy switchboxes to switch my computer's analog audio outputs between my computer speakers and my audio / video system in this room. http://electronicsusa.com/mk8.html

I also have a media extender in the other room that plugs into the main audio / video system and allows accessing audio / video files from the computer via wireless network (wireless router and adapter required) with a remote control. Having a wireless network can also come in handy for easily sharing internet access / files / printers with any other desktops or laptops in your home.
