Help me pick an inexpensive CD changer

I'm not looking for audiophile sound quality. I just want something for rack-n-stack playing while I work. But, I'm willing to pay extra for CD, SACD, and DVD-Audio since I have some and plan to get more. I don't need video, but some of the DVD players play SACD and DVD-Audio.

Right now, I'm really enjoying my Yamaha DVD-S2700 hooked up to my Yamaha RX-797 Klipsch RF-7, and Senn. HD-650. As you might have guessed, I'm leaning toward Yamaha gear. My budget is arround $100.

I'm browsing Craigslist and thrifts for good used gear and online retail for good deals. I found these this week:

Yamaha DV-C6760 5 disc changer, $50 used at craigslist-DC
plays CD, SACD, I'm not sure if it plays DVD-Audio

Yamaha DV-C6771 5 disc changer, $99 NEW at 4electronicwarehouse
plays CD, SACD, and DVD-Audio.

The other unit on my radar is the Yamaha DVD-C961, but that's going for $325 to $375 brand new online.

Alas, I can't find any info on the DV-C6771 at the Yamaha site. I suspect that it's similar to the DV-C6770 which is on the Yamaha archive page. I did find some review of the DV-C6771, see below.

I think I'll just get the DV-C6771 for $99 + free shipping.

The CL option looks pretty good rake. For the price, you should go that route. After all, it's not for reference.

I share your like for Yamaha players in the entry level arena. When I was looking for a CD player for my daughter, a changer, I compared the Yamaha to Denon and Onkyo side by side and preferred the Yamaha which was actually even cheaper. The Yamaha excelled with a much more natural sounding midrange and smoother high end. Both the Denon and Onkyo were better in bass detail.

Thanks for the replies poppac & Mr.P. I'm willing to spend an extra $48, to get a Yamaha Warranty and new-in-box.

30 dollars and 60 minutes later and I'm quite happy.

The Yamaha CDC-765 CD changer I picked up today is in great shape. This could be a winning combination: a TOTL 5 disc CD changer (Yamaha CDC-765); a TOTL single disc CD, SACD, DVD-A, DVD player (Yamaha DVD-S2700); and a TOTL receiver (Yamaha RX-797).

My new-used CDC-765 came with a pristine unused remote, original paper manual (oops Japanese only), and the original box and packing material. It looks good and matches my Yamaha RX-797 very well. All functions tested so far checkout OK. It sounds great.

Yes, the CDC-765 has optical output, variable output, and a headphone jack. The variable output can be controlled from the front panel or the remote and adjusts both the rear RCA outputs and the headphone jack. The headphone out sounds great with my Senn. HD-650. :14: This unit can be run solo with just AC power and a decent set of headphones. The optical output is one of the reasons I went with this unit, but I've not yet stepped in the world of external DAC.

Other great features are PLAYXCHANGE and the Yamaha PRO-Bit DAC (YAC-514F). The PLAYXCHANGE allows changing of discs while one is playing. The PRO-Bit DAC has been billed as the 'first "best sounding" Yamaha changer' (post #8).

It also syncs with external tape decks. So now I'm looking for a matching Yamaha cassette deck. Any suggestions?

The CDC-765 fulfill all my needs for rack-n-stack playing while I work, without, I think, much sacrifice in audio quality. The CDC-765 could usurp my DVD-S2700 as my main CD player.

Cool beans. Yes you're pretty much unbeatable with that machine. The DACs in those units aren't bad, but still a tad bright for my taste. It's all about what you dig. For reference I will suggest a DAC but for just background music to enjoy while you muck about...perfect!

I found that cabling helped to smooth out the signal. I use a pair of Audioquest Corals and they're perfect.

Glad to hear the wait was worth it!
Now you all got me thinking about hooking up a Yamaha player that was a throw in on ES receiver I picked up a couple of months ago. I await your review and some pics!!
