buying a cd player...

Hey gang...

it's not sure yet, but there's big chance I will buy a cd player...

but, I can't really make up my mind...

here are a few that I was thinking about:

marantz cd5001 (which, according to alot of forum members, is a really good cd player for it's price)

cambridge audio azur 340c or maybe (very maybe) a 540c v2

nad c521BEE, if not too expensive a c252BEE

or,
this might sound weird,
a Meridian 206 cd player, which is old, and used, but it was a 1,5 k cd player back then, and I found one for €450, maybe the dealer might sell it for a little less...

so, what do you guys think?

Hey Bert,
Merdian is a respected name in the audio world to be sure. It must be said, however, that progression in the art of digital reproduction has been and continues to be rapid. Older models, even from the best names, aren't always what they're cracked up to be.

Of the names mentioned I'd stick with the Marantz, but I wouldn't rule out the option of sticking with a basic transport and looking in to upgrading with an external DAC.

I was thinking kind of the same, the marantz also got my first choice, however that meridian isn't completely ruled out yet, I'll check them out one of the weeks,

how much do decent dac's tend to cost these days??

The NAD C521BEE is a nice player. Especially if you can get one on close out since the new C525BEE is out. I used the C521 and C521BEE for quite a while and was very happy. Happy enough to trade in the C521BEE for the C542. Which is a noticeable improvement.

Give a listen to the NAD players you will be pleasantly surprised.

IMHO, the Marantz is an excellent choice. I owned the NAD C521BEE for 2 years and eventually sold it and replaced it with a cheaper (but in my opinion far superior) Marantz CD5001....

But as I'll always say, you really need to listen to both and decide for yourself....

My vote is for the Marantz. Today I was listening to Memory by Lang Lang and for the first time I heard the piano string stuck by a wood hammer. In the past I heard the note but now I can hear how that note was created. I can now hear the lower notes and that they are created by a vibrating string. I find that to be very good resolution for $300.
