Compatibility of sound cards and systems?

Hi, My names is Gavin, and I'm pretty new to this whole surround sound speaker business. so my question is, If I have a 7.1 sound card in my computer, can I connect a 5.1 surround sound speaker system to it or does it have to be a 7.1 system??

Welcome to the board, sorry for the lack of responses. Base on the information you gave I would say yes. But more info would be nice ( card make up/outputs to speakers and connection type) many computer part manufacture claim alot about products but fail to explain in detail how the item should work or connect. Some of the more proven companies are creative, and Roland. Most other companies products conform to their standards and compatibility. So double check the manual (if it came with one) or go the the companys web site and see if there is more info on it.
