When I turn on the receiver I can adjust the volume with both the TV remote and the Receiver remote. Is this a bad hookup?

No, not at all. It can be very convenient to be able to control the receiver with the TV remote, and it isn't harmful in any way. Most remotes can be set up or programmed to control, (or partially control), multiple devices.

In my case I use my satellite TV PVR remote to switch on and volume control my receiver -- this is very handy.
