    wire gauge addition

Is there a formula to figure out what ~gauge wire you would have, if you have more than one strange of a smaller gauge wire?

Basically I am making some speaker wires, and I have a bunch of 24 gauge wire around. I was wondering if 3 strands of 24 gauge might be equal to like 18 gauge....or if I could actually know what exact gauge it would be equal too?

    Thanks

    A simple method...

When you add another wire of the same gauge, the combined gauge is 3 less than it was. i.e two 24 gauge wires = 21 gauge, three is 18, four would be 16, etc...

IOW, your math was right on.

Right text, small error in math: 2 #23 would be 21 gauge (correct), four #23 would be 18 gauge and 8 #23would be 15 gauge
