which cables are best to hook up a dvd player to a reciever, and then the reciever to a tv?
does using different cables for different components affect the overall sound, or shoulld i stick to one cable through my entire system

Use the cables that fit your plug sockets. Mix to your little heart's content.

Rat Shack Gold are very nice, pretty, and substantial for not a lot of $. The cheapies that come with many pieces of equipment will also work, but they have proven a bit unreliable to me, and finding an intermittent cable problem is a bother.

Some folk get intense about their cable religion but it's a waste of time. Try one fancy brand of cable throughout one channel and a different brand of fancy cable throughout the other channel and then flip back & forth with the balance. Most very probably you will hear no differences beyoud speaker room-placement effects.
