Any luck with BR-1s from PE?

i've been looking for some inexpensive decent bookshelf speakers for a second HT system. I saw kedexco asked about these before and noone really responded-

anyone have any experience with these BR-1s from parts express?

    thanks in advance!

I think you're talking about me...
I've since listened to a few pairs of these. They're kind of ugly, but sound incredibly good. The last guy I met who built a pair had the Energy C-3's and some older $400 Boston Acoustics bookshelfs. He claimed the BR-1's clearly sounded better. I only listend to them for about 20 minutes, against the C-3's but I'd believe it. They were at least as good, and at 1/3 to 1/4 the price it was a no brainer.
Excellent beginner project too, from what I've seen.

Post your question on the PE board and more than a few people well vouch for how great a kit these are!!! And as you get more confident and experienced, there's a few cheap and easy mods you can do to tweak ever last bit of performance out of these.

I'm thinking of buying 2 pairs to build my sister an HT system.

I was talking about you, kexodusc! I apologize about the butchering of your name. I meant to go to another post of yours and get the correct spelling, but I forgot to double check- made me laugh a little- sorry about that!

Thanks for the info! I was also thinking about the MKIII 10"subwoofer they have, too- I heard good things about that. I just don't like the crap shoot of not hearing it before buying it (or building it for that matter).

    Thanks again, Kex!!!

I frequent the PE board and have heard that the reliability of the BR-1 isn't so great but I mean for the price you can't beat it and it would be an excellent choice for a first DIY project. For a little more money you would have better sound with Ed Frias's AR.Com DIY speakers.
Here's a link to the ones I built: AR.com DIY crososver design
I built 5 of them and did the cabinets myself.

I would recommend the Dayton quattro over the MKIII. If your gonna spend that much money on a MkIII, I would use a Shiva or NHT driver. They sound nicer and have less distortion.
