Replacment/Upgrade Woofers for Design Acoustics PS-6A

Not sure if this belongs here or in the speaker section, but it's kind of a mod so I decided to put it here


Anyway, I've been using a pair of Design Acoustics PS-6A speakers with my secondary computer system. The woofers are really on their leg and weren't too impressive even when new.

Seeing as the speakers aren't worth all that much in the first place I don't want to put much money into the woofers, but they are a nice little pair of speakers that I'd like to hang on to, so I figured I'd go with a pair of the following low-priced woofers:

Anyone care to make a recommendation? The goldwood with silver cone has the best FR of the three, and is the least expensive. Do FR specs really mean much in the end? I'm really leaning towards that one due to the cost and FR, but if it really doesn't mean much, or if there is something unsuitable about the woofer I'd like to know.

I would need to know more about the speakers, I can't seem to find anything on them. I would say there are a few things to watch out for in the replacement woofer, efficiency probably being the most important. I know that some "cheap" speakers use efficent drivers with poor fidelity, and if you replaced it with a higher fidelity driver your speaker would end up terribly bright. I would ask you though, are you sure you want to bother? If it is not a good speaker, spending $50 or $60 dollars on replacement drivers would be a waste in my opinion. You can get a new pair of good speakers for $99.

Design Acoutics was Audio Technica's speaker brand. They aren't the most efficient speakers around, that's what I was thinking too about the cost of the woofers, which is why I wanted to stick with the cheaper ones. It's a sealed cabinet 12" tall, 8" wide, and 11" deep. It's just a two way with a 3/4" fabric dome tweeter.


They sound fine to me, and fit well for what I'm using them.

Well, hmm. With no T/S parameters or even a picture to work with, its hard to say what would be the best replacement. What does the woofer look like? what material is it?

Foam surrounds, treated paper cone, paper dustcap, shielded. I'll try to get some pics of the woofer and entire speakers. The foam ripped in a few places so I repaired it with some rubber cement. Was just a temp. fix until I got some new drivers.
