Re-Painting Components?

I know that this may seem foolish...but have any of you ever re-painted a component? I purchased a C.A.L Icon CD player for $15.00. I repaired the player and now it is in excellent working condition. However, the case is a bit knicked up and I was hoping to either paint it or find some way to restore its original pitch black finish. Any suggestions as to what type of paint to use? Can you think of a cleaning solvent that would remove marks that have appeared on the case from the previous owner?

Flat black spray paing from home depot? Or if it needs touch up some Testors flat black for painting models.
