I used to post to this forum about 5 years ago and ended up buying some great CD's as a result of recommendations (Yo La Tengo, Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, The Delgados, ...).

However, I then moved jobs, had 2 kids and generally stopped listening to music unless it was in the car or a snatched few minutes in the house.

I'm missing buying new stuff though and want to find out whats been released in the meantime. My taste is quite varied from Elvis, sixties R&B, classic rock and some heavy metal (nothing thrashy though), Tracy Chapman / Nick Drake and even Maroon 5. My recent purchases have been very chart focused though as the Maroon 5 example shows.

What have been the great releases of the last 5 years that I've missed but could catch up on? I'm open to any suggestions.

Cheers.

Hey, welcome back! Not much has changed here but there have been a ton of good albums talked about over the last few years. Hope you get a lot of diverse selections, but I just quickly culled twenty titles from my little mini-review site of albums that I still like to talk about and listen to regularly and here they are as links to my comments....questions, feedback and unruly discourse welcome :)

Davey,

Thanks for this list and links to your site, it'll keep me occupied all evening.

I have to hold my hand up and admit that from your list I've only actually hear of Wilco and Grandaddy and have albums from neither. However I did see a couple of the albums likened to Mercury Rev and The Beatles so i'll have a read of your reviews and might take a chance with a few.

Many thanks,

Gav.

I have the Doves album and still play it so it's already one of my favourites of the last few years.

There's an overlap with Davey's list so I'll follow up on those ones.

Gav.

PS. I don't know if Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or Jet have a following here but they're both in my car at the moment and are very good for waking me up in the morning.

I have both B.R.M.C. releases and the Jet release. The Jet got old pretty fast with me and I haven't heard it in quite awhile although I still hear Cold Hard B!tch on the radio from time to time. The B.R.M.C. is pretty cool. I preferred their first s/t album over the second for some reason. Just strikes me as a better album, musically.

By the looks of it I don't believe you're a progger so I can't offer many things in the way of new releases outside of that but I'll throw out a few things:

The Killers - Hot Fuss
The Mooney Suzuki - Alive and Amplified
Trashcan Sinatras - Weightlifting
Gov't Mule - Deja Voodoo (blues rock)
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia (on the proggier side of things)

It's not much.

Yeah, tons of great stuff. I get most of my recs form Mark the Ex Lion Tamer so pay close attention to what he likes. And that outcast we affectionately call Sloshy. And Troy always has something weird and zany in his player. And Finchy keeps us from getting too far out in indie hipster ville. Along with ForeverAutumn. And Stoney, and all the rest. Great knowledge and some pretty damn good taste in music around here, although I'll admit that sometimes I'm too easily seduced by a crappy casio and some quirky, off-key warbling ;).

I was actually quite a progger in the 80's and was a big Marillion fan from Market Square Heros / Grendel until Fish left. I then stuck with Fish for a couple of albums but eventually lost interest as the quality seemed to go downhill rapidly.

My favourite 80's prog album was The Sentinel by Pallas, I have a CD version now but they added a couple of extra tracks in the middle that don't fit so I usually got back to the LP.

The only recent prog album I have bought was the first Transatlantic one but I didn't really get on with it and eventually got rid of it in my one and only CD clear out. I didn't really like Transatlantic as the songs were too long and complex and I guess my tastes have gone more mainstream and anything over 5 minutes for a track now seems to be just too much. However, if there's any modern prog stuff out there which isn't over complex just for the sake of complexity please let me know.

I've just placed an order at www.secondspin.com for;

Built To Spill - Ancient Melodies Of The Future
Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows
Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
Nugent, Ted - Cat Scratch Fever
Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life
Teenage Fanclub - Four Thousand Seven Hundred And Sixty...
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Yo La Tengo - Summer Sun

They'll take time to come from the US but I can't wait to get listening now.

I've used Secondspin for a while as they ship without the jewel cases which saves money on postage to the UK. Are their any other websites that sell good quality secondhand CD's for reasonable prices and ship to the UK as the availability at Secondspin is sometimes limited?

I have that one. I also have one from a couple of years ago by The Datsuns which is similar. I haven't bought the latest Kings of Leon CD yet though so I guess their first one hasn't been at the top of my listening list.

None of these modern basic rock albums really match up to Bon Scott era AC/DC though do they?

Well, comparison to AC/DC is pretty tough. Have you listened to White Stripes - Elephant? That's a good one that a bunch of people I know that are primarily classic rock listeners get into.

I couldn't get into the White Stripes, it was too basic and I didn't take to the guys voice. I tried with the Elephant album as it seemed to be amazingly popular in the UK but couldn't make it through a 2nd listen, luckily I'd only borrowed it.

Hey Gav good to see a fellow Brit hanging around here, there used to be another guy called Les but he dropped out a while ago.

I've used Second spin in the past and sending without cases is like you say good for keeping the postage down, also being 2nd hand keeps you under the £18 import threshold, but I seem to have exhausted my 'favourites' list of late so haven't used them for a while.

Best for me is Play.com who have a pretty good catalogue with free delivery, no import duty to pay and they are fast. I've also just started using http://www.djangomusic.com/ who do new and 2nd hand stuff. These people ship to the UK for free if you spend $25 on new CD's which given the current exchange rate means you can pick up a couple of brand new CD's which you might only come by as 'imports' in the UK for about £8 each or less delivered.

I could throw a few comps your way with a fair bit of the stuff mentioned below you say you haven't heard of if you want to sample some recent stuff, pm me with your details if you are interested.

Cheers
Mike

If you like Jet and Kings of Leon, try a couple of Canadian bands.

The Trews, House Of Ill Fame
Boy, Every Page You Turn

The Trews is more along the lines of Jet and KofL. Boy is more 60's influenced. I hear a lot of Beatles and The Byrds in this one. Both are very good pop/rock disks IMHO. But certainly not in the same league as AC/DC. They are much lighter.

Ancient Melodies Of The Future is actually still one of my favorite CDs. Try also Keep It Like A Secret, which came out before AMOTF, but is still a similar album.
