i was just wondering what the best speakers i can get for around $500-$800. i already have a sub and receiver.Assuming you are looking for a 5.1 setup, a good all around choice for music and movies would be a package of five Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 (http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/cbm170/cbm170.html) speakers which sells for $748 + shipping (http://www.ascendacoustics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=S22-2000&Category_Code=HTS-5) in the United States. Some reviews of the CBM-170 are here (http://www.audioreview.com/Main+Speaker/Ascend+Acoustics/PRD_125308_1594crx.aspx), here (http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/ascendacoustics_cbm170.htm) and here (http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/reviews/proreviews.html).

However, it would be helpful to have more information. Such as: Do you listen primarily to music or movies? What receiver do you have? How large is your listening room? Are there any speakers which you have already heard that you like the sound of? Finally, what country are you in?

What he said. Its like asking you what color to paint my room? Size of room, type of reciever and sub. Carpet, hardwood floors, plaster walls or sheetrock, lots of padded furniture,it all has to be taken into account. Towers or smalls. You thought it would be easy. :D

I'll second BargainSeekers opinion on Ascends. They are a very neutral speaker, and do both H/T and Music extremely well a their price point. If your lookin for 1 pair only, the 340's have an extra driver and are built for medium sized to large rooms.

The best part about Ascend is how their speakers look. Very understated, quality built cabinets yet nothing that would cause friends or neighbors to comment on them while they are off. What you pay for is the components INSIDE the speaker. This is why they are considered a good bargain.

Sell the sub you have and use the money to buy a nice pair of JBL L100, about 300-500 USD. ( they have two subs - one 12" in each speaker ! )

Anyway - no matter how you put it, it is what YOU feel sound great. Reading the reviews on this web site, all speakers are rated 5 of 5 in most reviews ? So I wouldn't place my final decision too much on the reviews.

What counts is to hear and compare the particular speaker and then decide. Unless you go for some old classics which have proven long term reputation in the market.

I think in brief speakers can be divided in three groups - old vintage ( which in somes opinion is "colored" ) and the new generation of big-sound-in-a-small-box, and the "new vintage" flor stand high end speakers ( expensive ).

Dont think subs build into towers are as good as a stand alone sub. Room saver but not as good.
