Do I need monster cables for connecting just a pair of speakers to my receiver? I listen to music everyday and I want best sound out of my speakers.

No, you don't need monster cable for best sound.
If you have short run, use Belden 5000. And if longer run, use Canare 4S11 :)

Not everyone thinks speaker cables are different, I do, but realize that the prices can be excessive.
Radio Shack carries a flat braid speaker cable made to go under carpets. The point is this stuff sounds pretty damn good, carpet or not and it's cheap. :D

Well I thought that if the cables were thicker the connection would be better between the receiver and the speakers.

12 AWG lamp cord works fine.
