What is native resolution on a TV? I notice that Sony 42'' HD Plamsa TV has a native resolution around 1024 X1024. I once read that in order to get HD picture, the second number has to be greater than 720. Most of the HD TV (LCD, Plasma, DLP Projection) has a resolution between 1200-1300X720.

In your opinion, is 1024X1024 better than 1200X720?

Thanks for your comment

First and foremost ... if you desire value for your dollars, you should not be looking at plasma displays in general, nor at Sony displays (of any type) in particular. Although Sony's picture quality is exemplary, their reliability and technical support is not!

As to your question(s) about "resolution" ...

The numbers that are referred to describe the number of pixels - first in the vertical plane, then in the horizontal. The first number (the vertical) is the critical one to qualify the display as being capable of "HiDef" images. It needs to be at least 720 in order to qualify ... anything less than that must be called EDTV at best, not HDTV. Sometimes, the number order is quoted in reverse, with the vertical number following the horizontal. Just remember that the lesser of the two will be the vertical number, and the greater number will be the horizontal.

With all of that out of the way, let me say that the entire subject of "resolution" is not only greatly misunderstood - it's importance is also vastly overrated when it comes to video displays. Don't get caught up in making it a BIG issue when you shop for an HDTV set.

Hope this helps you

1024x1024 resolution might not be correct. I think you meant 1,280 x 720 pixels (720 lines progressively scanned), or 1,920 x 1080 pixels (1080 lines interlace scanned).

Of two HD formats, 1280 x 720 format will have less artifact due to being progressive (excellent for high action scene such as monday night football). 1920 x 1080 will have more details due to having more pixels count, but since it is interlaced, it will have more artifacts than 720 format. So 1920 x 1080 format will be excellent for materials that is not action intensive. But as Woodman said, both formats are HD and offer excellent picture quality.

By the way, most "fixed" display monitors on the market today (such as LCD, plasma, and DLP devices) are capable of 1280 x 720 format only.

the Sony utilizes a Hitachi technology called ALiS, alternating lighting of surface, creating a densier vertical pixel structure thus giving the rez count of 1024. However i would not base my choice on resolution counts only ( nor would i even consider a plasma ).
