I have not tried the compact, but I have tried the Kef Q1 and it is a brilliant speaker, it midrange is oh so wonderful..in fact in the last couple of days I have been thinking about getting one and doing all the tweaky things to get the very best sound. It is a fairly sensitive speaker @ 91dB. The compact is fairly new addition to the family, maybe close your eyes and get the Q1 because that is the business.
I have heard the Q1 as well and it is a nice speaker for the money - apparently it does not mind near wall positioning which means it might be quite a room friendly speaker(always handy to have). I found it wanting in the bass and considering the price the metal tweeter is handled pretty well - they seem to be doing what some others are doing by having a slightly bright tweeter and then having it sound laid back - longer auditions would have been usefull for me - but it certainly hangs in with other spekaers i've heard here for around $500.00Cdn. I'm not sure it would be my first choice - Kef have their following they look well built. A review http://hifichoice.co.uk/review_read.asp?ID=2455 an the B&W counterpart http://hifichoice.co.uk/review_read.asp?ID=2766 and in Canada anyway the B&W 602S3 might be close in price http://hifichoice.co.uk/review_read.asp?ID=2451

I partially agree your comments about the Q1 wanting in bass (not much of it), but then it is a bookshelf with 91dB sensitivity (very good), so I would not hold that against it. As they saying goes, bass, sensitivity and size, pick any two :D I think the DM302/303 are totally outclassed as bass on the DM models are very plummy with relatively poor articulation, A more competitive model from the B&W range will be the 601S3 cos the 602S3 gives more bass but also sounds more boxy, a serious shortcoming in my books.
