...for the last week or so? Mine:
Coheed and Cambria, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 -- the lead singer sounds like Geddy Lee, and the music is very cool hard rock/proggy. They're also reminding me of someone else, but I can't put my finger on it. Placebo? No, that's not it...
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus -- sort of a sick and twisted "Storytellers".
Jeff Beck, Jeff -- very good instrumental rock from the master...well, one of the masters, anyway.
Sigur Ros, Von -- re-release of their first album. I like, though not as much as their last two.
Eyvind Kang, Virginal Co-ordinates -- Mike Patton never sounded so classically trained (though his voice only appears on a couple tracks). The rest is sort of minimalistic neo-classical.
Unkle, Never, Never, Land -- !
Raphael Rudd, The Awakening, produced by Pete Townshend -- it's okay, not my favourite.
A Perfect Circle, eMOTIVe -- chock full of covers, mostly unrecognizable. A fun game: listen without looking at the track listing, trying to guess the originals.
The Music, Welcome to the North -- a little more rocky than the first one, a little more groovy. A perfectly adequate sophomore effort.
Autumn Tears, Eclipse -- meh, not bad, but I'm getting a little tired of their cheesiness.
Mike Oldfield, Tr3s Lunas -- not an instant classic, but then again, very little he's done lately is classic.
Tim Hecker, Mirages -- alienware.
v/a, Putting the Morr back in Morrissey -- I thought this was a Morrissey tribute, it's not. It's a Morr Music label sampler. That's cool. Notwist shows up on here as well.
Selena Cross, Strip -- pop.
Happy the Man, The Muse Awakens -- one of their best efforts, ever.
Ikara Colt, Basic Instructions (EP) -- pretty cool post-punk.
Also, some Dresden Dolls, Rob Dougan, and some other stuff in the car...will have to dig it out later.
LOTW is still Nick Cave, I am totally addicted to this album. Or it might be Dresden Dolls.

Hey Dusty, long time no post.
Something has happened to me in the past year or two since I lost touch with AR...my music has left me. My CD's have gathered dust and I almost never listen to music in the car. Of the few musical purchases I have made recently, probably half of them still have their shrink wrap on.
My rig has been largely disassembled and I currently have a hodge podge of mid fi equipment running what used to be my rear speakers in my B system as my mains and I don't even have surround. Part of this is because I am forced to live in an apartment as a temporary layover till I buy a house next year, but mostly it is just apathy.
I think I need you guys for inspiration to get back on the musical track. I am done questing for the ultimate audiophile setup. I just want to get back to basics. Can you help a brudda out?
Ray Lamontagne – Trouble
Produced by Ethan Johns (who I didn't realise is the son of Glynn Johns famed producer, which explains why I like his work so much) who plays drums and bass. I'm just getting into this but it's like a cross between Otis Redding and Van Morrison with a 70's feel.
Earlies – These Were The Earlies
Joseph Arthur – Our Shadows Will Remain
Got this from a good source on Rave Recs and it's a gem
Kings Of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak
I liked the last one a lot but the jury is still out on this one
Green Day – American Idiot
Magnet – On Your Side
Blue Nile – High
Micah P Hinson – Gospel Of Progress
Mainly earthy broody acoustic work with some great vocals, he's supporting the Earlies around the UK at the moment
Hey Audiobill thanks for the truckload of goodies you just sent I owe you one big time, just working my way through them but so far I really like Magnet and West Indian Girl - Thanks
Cheers
Mike

Finally got my delivery from Alternative Tentacles Records yesterday, so I've been digesting a couple of Flaming Stars albums. Sunset & Void, is the one Davey has posted about a couple of times recently. And it's gotten a couple of full spins in the last 24 hours, nothing to complain about so far, as it is thekindamuzikIlike. Ginmill Perfume, which I think gathers "B" sides fro the earlier part of their career has only received a first side spin so far, but it seems to be a winner too. Pretty sure that Slosh & Stone & Audiobill and probably Mike would like this band, but then they're so much hipper than I, so this may well be old news.
Also gave a spin or two to the following....
Chappaquiddick Skyline ...this was one of a little shipment from Audiobill that I've been spinning for the last month. This was the least liked of the three that Bill sent, at first, but it's charms have been revealing themselves more and more with each listen. Won't become my favorite, but at the very least, Leave Me Alone is an awesome song.
Eels - Daisies of the Galaxy..my favorite of the crop that Bill sent. I love this album, and I get a big kick out of my (8-year-old) daughter who stops obsessing over Hillary Duff just long enough to to sing along to to I Like Birds.
The Strokes - Room on Fire
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Silver Jews - American Water
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Beck - Mutations
Shins - Chutes Too Narrow...not an '04 release, but it is my favorite purchase of the year.
Kings of Leon - Youth & Young Manhood
Franz Ferdinand
The Libertines
Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie & Live in Athens, GA
Gregory Isaacs - Mr. Isaacs
Interpol - Antics
Mclusky - Mclusky do Dallas
And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Sufjan Stevens - Seven Sweans
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
Grandaddy - Sumday
Los Lobos - La Pistol Y El Corazon
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Bill Evans Trio - Sunday At the Village Vanguard & Portrait in Jazz
Sonny Rollins - A Night at the Village Vanguard
Duke Ellington - Blues in Orbit
Jesse Cook - Vertigo

Jethro Tull - Nothing Is Easy: Live at the Isle of Wight 1970
Jethro Tull - Aqualung (DCC)
Eloy - Dawn
Eloy - Inside
Happy The Man - The Muse Awakens
FZ - Hot Rats
Gordian Knot - Gordian Knot
Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power
Moody Blues - Childrens Children
Cressida - Asylum
Strawbs - Ghosts
Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love
Jean Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger
Al DiMeola - Casino
John McLaughlin - Devotion

Hey man. How's things?
How about the latest Elliott Smith, or one I really like that hasn't received much attention is from your hometown boys Black Heart Procession, along with Solbakken, with their release for the In the Fishtank series. If you really want back to basics, straight forward rock, try the latest Ted Leo + Pharmacists record, Shake the Sheets.

First plug it in, then take the shrink wrap off and play it. That's all there is to it. Go nuts! You can get goofy fixating on gear. Moments ago I was thinking of what that M83 album would sound like on Maf's speakers. Monumental is my guess.
Anyway I've been playing:
The Legends-Up Against the Legends
Ella Guru-The first Album
The National-The Cherry Tree
Radiohead-Amnesiac
Radiohead-OK Computer
Ryan Adams-Gold
The Furs-Midnight To Midnight
Elvis Costello-Trust
Gillian Welch-Time (The Revelator) Not digging this one, you guess can have her
Sinead O'Connor-She Who Dwells...
Assemblage 23-Storm
Otis Taylor-Respect For the Dead-yes, blues. I'll say it again, blues.
Cars-Greatest Hits
U2-Zooropa
The Sound-From The Lion's Mouth
Mighty Lemon Drops-Happy Head
Mighty Lemon Drops-Out of Hand EP
Clash-Combat Rock
Interpol-Antics
Postal Service-Give Up
Intelligent Toys 2-Various Artists this is a d/l of 192 mp3s avail at http://www.sutemos.net/en/ asstd. electronica.
Various and asst. comps especially a new one sent to me from Allears featuring two stellar tracks by Arab Strap, and Apostle of Hustle. Great stuff.

. . . Apostle of Hustle. Great stuff.
How would you describe their sound? They're playing here Thursday night, and I can get free tix, but I know virtually nothing about these guys except I've heard the band includes a member (or members) of Broken Social Scene.

Monumental, huh? Geez, now I gotta re-think that PM I just sent you.
BTW, there's an open invitation to come by and give it a listen anytime you're in my neck of the woods. Just don't expect one of those eclectic (read: crappy) beers that Davey's always going on about. Actually, I'm a Scotch man...single malt, if you please.

I know next to nothing... The opening track of Allears' comp uses the track "Gleaning" which has very-very cool Four Tet folktronica flavor but I can't speak to the rest of the album. I'm currently in the process of seeing if I can weasle a copy of that disc since I can't seem to find it locally, big shock that's it's not available in Kansas City.

Yeah, I hadn't spun the Prieboy in a looong time. It's alotta fun, innit? "Maybe that's Not Her Head" still makes me howl. I love the production values. Whatever happened to the guy?
"The Ring" is like Cat Stevens gone prog. I think you'd hate it.

Yeah, that's the one I"m playing right now-appropriately enough "Big Rock Finish" is blasting out ahora mismo. That guy is still wrapped up in his White Boy Wins Lotto show which is a musical loosely based on Axle Rose' life. That's been the deal for a number of years. I had a line on a guy with several boots of that (those?) show(s) but he and Andy are buds and he promised never to allow them to circulate. It was Tobydammit, perhaps you've seen him post occasionally on JTL's board.
Think I'm gonna take Sins with me in the car now and probably take Ugly Americans to the gym today. Prieboy kick sounds good.

A quick summary this week…
One I haven’t mentioned before…
Jello Biafra with the Melvins If you like Jello and the Melvins, you’ll like this. Jello’s back on his angry political high horse with characteristic sense of humor. The Melvins make a great backing band for him. Politically charged, of course, so Republicans probably wanna skip this one. Hell, moderate Democrats will probably be offended.
Some stuff I’ve talked about before and don’t have time to rehash…
Postal Service
The Who: Quadrophenia
The Clash: Sandinista
The Drifters: Golden Hits
Tiger Army: Ghost Tigers Rise
Social Distortion: the new one which kicks ass, the title of which escapes me
Afrikaa Bmabaataa: Dark Matter
Savath & Savalas: Appropa’t
ISAN: Lucky Cat
Prince: Muisicology
Songs: Ohia – Electric Magnolia Company
The Cure: Seventeen Seconds
Nelly: Suit
Reverend Horton Heat: Speed Kills (a comp I made of his stuff)
Lou Reed: Street Hassle, Coney Island Baby, and a couple more…
Probably missed some, but that’s enough for now…

December: Lament Configuration
Oh yeah, this is badass. Kinda like a Converge/Dillinger Escape Plan hybrid--not the most original thing out there, but extremely well-executed noisecore. Lots of changing riffs and time signatures, but not as manic or technical as DEP. Never freaking lets up--on occasion the guitars drop out leaving the bass or drums for a couple seconds, and that's about as sedate as it gets. Of special note is the vocalist, who is downright insane--he seamlessly pulls off a combo of death growls, brutal screams, and Jacob Bannon-like shrieks. Produced by Devin Townsend (excellent job). Favorite track is probably "Vertigo," though they're all sweet. Thanks for sending this to me Jar.
Other albums:
Modest Mouse: The Moon And Antarctica
Radiohead: The Bends
Wes Montgomery: The Incredible Jazz Guitar Of...
Jaco Pastorius: self-titled
Thelonious Monk: Brilliant Corners
Charlie Parker: The Bird Returns
I finally, finally have a copy of Mastodon's Leviathon on the way. Expect a rave review soon. ; P

LPs
Fritz Kreisler Souvenirs, including some of Kreisler's own compositions, some of his arrangements of Dvorak pieces, and a little work by Dohnanyi. Fritz Kreisler, violin; Carl Lamson, piano. Recorded from 1924-1929. RCA Victrola VIC-1372. Kreisler was quite the violinist.
Mischa Elman Plays Kreisler Favorites. Mischa Elman, violin; Joseph Seiger, piano. LP, Vanguard Everyman Classics SRV-367 SD. This is stereo. The performances are very fine, of course.
Mozart, Symphonies Nos. 38 and 41. Sir Thomas Beecham, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. LP, Columbia Odyssey 32 16 0023. Mono. I'm not sure of the recording dates but I think it was in the early 1950s.
Boston Pops Encores. Arthur Fiedler, conductor. DG 2584 018.
CDs
Beethoven, Symphony No. 9. Leibowitz, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Chesky CD66. I also did some comparisons with Schmidt-Isserstedt, Suitner, Cluytens, and Ansermet.
Berlioz, Harold en Italie. Wolfram Christ, viola; Lorin Maazel, Berliner Philharmoniker. DG 415 109-2. This is a sort of cross between a symphony and a viola concerto inspired by Byron's Childe Harold. It's a very nice work.
Ippolitov-Ivanov, Caucasian Sketches. Siegfried Landau, Music for Westerchester Symphony Orchestra. On Russian Favorites, Vox Allegretto ACD 8161. I have a guilty fondness for this piece by a pretty minor composer. The recording is not audiophile quality but is pleasant, but the performance is the best I have heard.
Schubert, Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7(8), "Unfinished." Otmar Suitner, Staatskapelle Berlin. Denon 38C37-7156. These are really very fine performances and the sound is wonderful, very smooth, even though it is early digital (1983).
Mozart, Symphonies Nos. 35, "Haffner," and 41, "Jupiter." Josef Krips and Rene Leibowitz, resectively, Royal Philhamonic Orchester. On Chesky CD16.

a guy came up and said... "you just played Led Zeppelin, which makes you a very cool DJ. But any DJ can play Led Zeppelin. You played an obscure Zeppelin song, which makes you the coolest DJ I've ever heard." aww!
I played a few songs from my JC comp:
Snow Patrol - Chocolate
Snow Patrol - Wow
West Indian Girl - Hollywood
I also played one minute of the Headset song. When I learn how to remix and get one of those expensive programs like Tractor or Ableton... I'm going to fix that song. :)haha
That one minute is very cool. :D
An English guy who was here to run the Marathon, his first time in NYC, came up to the booth and said, "How do you know all these bands? I feel like I'm at home."

Helmet, Size Matters -- sorry, it's just kind of...there. I'm going to try giving it some more attention.
Fates Warning, FWX -- excellent effort from these guys. Time will tell, but I think it's their second best effort (A Pleasant Shade of Gray being their first).
Psyche, Legacy -- very cool synth pop. I was surprised at the variety of vocalists.
TV on the Radio, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes -- bizarre. Definitely kind of unique sounding. I hear the Talking Heads reference, and yet, I don't. It's just...their brand of wackiness.
Count Zero, Affluenza -- proggy wackiness, good.
Guitar Shorty, Watch Your Back -- not bad, for a blues album.
