Looking for a good integrated amp or AV rec

Hi all,

I am new at this, currently I have a Sony A/V receiver GA8ES and it has developed some noise/static on the center channel. I am in the market for a integrated amp or A/V receiver (I don't really need a tuner).

I listen to 60% music (95% classical music) 40% movie/video. The room is about 13 x 13. My budget is about $800.00 and I don't mind getting a used piece.

For less than $1000.00, would you recommend a used Sunfire 5 ch. amp or a new Yamaha AVR RX V2500?

can someone recommend some entry level amp/preamp combo. I need a combo for both music as well as HT.

"September 29th - Just received the spec's on the Yamaha RX-V1500 and RX-V2500. Unless I'm very much mistaken (with apologies to Murray Walker) there's bugger all difference between the new and old models (except an extra 10 Watts per channel). I have a Marantz SR7200 in my TV room. Built like a Rock, Great for HT, has DTS, Optical Inputs Galore, over 100 Watt per Channel, Etc. I went with a NAD Integrated for 2 Channel listening, I am still breaking it in, too early for a review.

I have seen the SR7400 on Ebay for about $600, seems like a good deal (about 45% off US Retail)

Price is not Canadian for the Yamaha. Yamaha RXV-1500 is more like $1099.99 and the RXV-2500 is going at $1299.99 ! Pat.P

You are going to have problems with anything you buy due to room dimensions. A square room is a sonic nightmare (standing waves and room modes are virtualy undefeatable without knocking out a wall).

That being said... try NAD. These are no-frills A/V receivers that sound better than many mass-market seprates. The T743 or T753 are both under your budget and preform well. Pre-out/Main-in features on both are great for future flexability. You can always bypas either the amp or preamp in any combination you desire.

Go to their website and call an authorized dealer that is near you. Take your speakers to the store and get a private demo. You Won't be displeased. Ask if you can borrow a demo unit. Few stores do this today but the good ones still do.
