If I buy a DVD player that can play mp3s, then I should be able to burn mp3s on a DVD-R and play it through right?

Nope, not exactly. You can put them on a CD-R though. Not many players will read them from a DVD-R.

you need to get a computer program that will burn the mp3's to disc then you need to have a player that plays dvd-rs and dvd+rs or it wont work

Even then, not many players will read them from DVD-R. I'm not sure which ones will, but none of the ones I've seen will do it.

There are a lot of players that play MP3s only from CD-Rs. But a growing number will play them from DVDs. Go here:

and select DVD-MP3 in the search field to see a list of players that do what you're wanting.
