Frozen Orange is the name and smart, fun music is the game. Love this guy and this might be his best record yet....solo, or with the Clean. Top notch all the way through. It's not gonna change the course of modern music or anything like that, but if you love the best of bands like Yo La Tengo and Luna and REM and the Feelies and all the other descendants of the softer jangle rock sound of the Velvet Underground, you may really like this too. His last two records are on Merge in the US so are very easy to come by, as opposed to the excellent one before that titled with the Heavy Eights, which is an NZ import. All have very nice sound as a bonus, especially this latest one (although to be truthful, I'm listening to it on a pretty crappy stereo right now so I may be imagining the good sound :)). Lots of cool guitar. Only 35 minutes long so I have to play it at least twice. Just checked and there's a nice review up at AMG which you can see if you click on the diver below :)

Picked up the latest from TV On The Radio yesterday too. Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. Haven't played it yet but have heard a couple songs from it before and really like their sound and know that some others around here already have it and have said good things. Looking forward to giving it a listen later. Another one of those nice price deals for under 10 smacks at the local indie store....could use a lot more of those!

Any new Labor Day music for you other Rave Wrecks?

I looked for it today in a rare visit to Tower, but like the other five disks I was searching for, nada.

Well the chance would be a fine thing but the durn furriners seem to be getting first shot... which sucks!

Got your message and will post the comp off plus Here Come The Cars and Sidewalk EP.

Gotta go, Chris.

Who you callin a durn furriner?! Hehehe, I forgot we got this one a couple weeks before his own homeland. Woo hoo! But you furriners get it tomorrow, I think. Nice album and those guys from Lambchop really provide some nice backing along with his own Heavy Eights as well. Really easy on the ears. Nice review over at PopMatters a while back too :)

As I've mentioned in the past, I don't have any good choices locally to find the music I like, so I shop on the net. Not only is the selection nearly unlimited, but the prices are usually much better as well. DeepDiscountcd offers the "Free Shipping" option that I always take advantage of, even though it takes up to 2 weeks to get my cds (this info isn't meant for you, Davey). I not normally in a rush to have something, and with no sales tax, free S&H and lower prices, who the hell cares? And there's no minimum order to get the free shipping, so you can order one cd at a time and get the freebie.

I've had that TV on the Radio disc for a couple months but it didn't do much for me. Maybe I need to give it another chance? Heck, I can't even remember what it sounded like, so I guess I'd better dig it out of the case.

I got it for $11.77 w/free shipping from deepdiscountcd.com
Yeah, it's not too costly. You can even get it for $9.99 at alldirect.com. Have you noticed that they are starting to stock the new stuff a little sooner? This one isn't even 2 weeks old and they have it available. Of course you need to order a bunch there to get the free shipping but if they're gonna start stocking the new stuff I might just have to give them a shot again. Best prices around. I think it cost $11.99 at my indie store plus a bunch of tax. Still not bad and a lot better than paying a couple bucks over list at a major label rathole like Tower which wouldn't have it anyway as tentoze found out. They don't have much indie stuff there anymore.

Still haven't spun the TV On The Radio yet. Maybe I won't like it that much either. Hmmmm. I thought you kinda liked it? You are gonna really like the David Kilgour. It's kind of like when Robyn Hitchcock is really good, which unfortunately doesn't happen all that often in modern times. But with Kilgour it happens on every album. It'll make you all happy inside. Unless you don't get happy inside anymore?

My problem is that when I want something, I want it NOW. That semi-annual trip into Tower yesterday just confirmed to me why I loathe it. The little 19 yr-old girl at the check-out asked me if I found everything okay, and being so affable, I naturally said' "No- I NEVER find what I'm looking for in here. That's why I hardly ever come in. Tower sucks." Believe it or not, I don't think she cared. At least, she didn't act like it. Hehe.

They did have Norman & Nancy Blake's latest release, Morning Glory Ramblers, which surprised me a bit. IT is the absolute roots of roots music- the oldest song is dated to the 1830's. I love it.

As you mentioned, their selection was a major downer, but if they're getting better, maybe I'll give them another shot. As for Robyn Hitchcock, I agree that he's been less than stellar of late. I have "Jewels for Sophia" which was critically acclaimed, but I didn't do much for me. Maybe I never gave it a chance, something I've been guilty of a lot lately. My time has become so valuable lately, and if a cd doesn't grab me after a couple spins, I usually put it aside and forget about it. That may be a costly mistake at times, but it's reality for me.

Sure I still get happy inside. Did you detect that I've been a little out of sorts lately? If so, you are correct. Collect $200 and pass go. I'm not depressed mind you, just a bit out of it for the past 7-8 months or so. Summer was a bummer for the most part. I had lots of good times, but didn't get to golf or play my guitars nearly often enough, and I have too much business travel in store in the coming months. Early retirement is starting to look really good right now, but that's still a fairly long way off. All I know is, I can't keep up at this pace for too many more years (sigh).

I do look forward to that Kilgour record, and I'll probably like it too. One little side note: I knew a guy back in high school named Dave Kilgour. He was a couple years older than me and was a pretty cool dude as I remember. He was tragically killed in Florida during a drug deal gone sour many years ago. I guess he just followed the wrong path in life and ended up on the wrong side of a gun.

Yeah, I finally got around to listening to it myself and other than the one or two songs I'd already heard, it didn't do much for me either. Not sure why it's quite so widely acclaimed although it does have growth potential so I'm not writing it off. Just seems a little underdeveloped (and underwhelming) after the first listen, especially after basking in the warm glow of that new David Kilgour CD for the last few days. Oh well, most of the others I've bought recently have been pretty damn good.

I bought the David Kilgour CD a week or so ago, and I think I paid $10.88. Unfortunately, I've only spun it once so far, and that was a distracted listen. Hopefully soon I'll get a chance to spend some more time with it. How does it compare to his earlier solo work style-wise (none of which I've heard)?

I haven't picked up that TVOTR album yet. After reading all the formal and informal reviews of it, I got the feeling that it could be a letdown after their great debut EP, so I've stayed away from it so far.

It's not much different than the previous two, which I think kind of congealed his current sound, but it's warmer and happier overall than anything I've heard from him before. I'd attribute some of it to the sympathetic backing from the Lambchop guys cause it does have some of that slighly lusher cosmopolitan sound they're known for. I'd liken it to Luna's last album, Romantica, compared to some of their earlier ones. Same style but just a warmer sound and very infectious. The songs sound so simple and effortless, but at the same time you're concious that there's quite a bit going on to fill up the soundfield. Very easy to like on a multitude of levels and heartily recommended to all.
