View Full Version : Should social media have user limits like casinos?

I was thinking about this yesterday after I caught myself scrolling for way longer than I meant to. I had only opened the app to check one message, but then I got pulled into videos, comments, random notifications — the usual. It kind of reminded me of a tour I once took through a casino with some friends just for fun. They showed us how there were built-in limits, warnings, and little reminders telling people to take breaks or set boundaries. I realized social media doesn’t really have anything like that, even though it can be just as absorbing. So now I’m wondering: should these platforms add something similar? Like reminders to stop, time limits, or even simple “you’ve been scrolling a while” messages?

I’ve wondered the same thing, and I remember reading this article https://nichegamer.com/the-dopamine-economy-casinos-vs-social-media/ that talks about how both social media and casino systems run on unpredictable rewards, which is why it’s so easy to lose track of time. For me, the worst part used to be checking an app “for a minute” and ending up stuck for half an hour, and I only realized how often it happened after trying one of those optional screen-time timers on my phone. It actually felt similar to what casinos do with break reminders, and it helped me see how easily those small dopamine hits pull me in. I think if social platforms added more built-in tools like that, they’d honestly make things easier for a lot of people rather than feeling restrictive.

Just passing by this thread and found the topic pretty interesting. I never really thought about comparing social apps to casinos in terms of responsibility features, but the idea makes sense when you think about how much time people end up spending on their phones without realizing it. Even simple reminders could probably help some users keep track of their day better. I’m not super invested in either side of the debate, but it’s cool seeing people discuss these things in a calm and thoughtful way.
