I’ve been trying to freshen up my small living room, but I can’t seem to decide on the right color palette. I recently painted one wall a soft gray, thinking it would make the room feel more spacious, but now it feels kind of dull. A friend told me to try something warmer like a pale terracotta, but I’m not sure it would match my dark furniture. Has anyone else dealt with this? I’d love to hear what colors made your space feel cozy but not cramped.

I get what you mean about gray making things look flat—it happens a lot in smaller spaces. When I redid my cousin’s studio apartment, we mixed a creamy beige with muted green accents, and it instantly felt bigger and more alive. If you ever decide to repaint or even bring in some pros, you could check out Painters in Port Alberni, BC (https://www.vilocal.ca/l/port-alberni-bc/painters) — they’ve got some examples of how color tones affect space perception. Sometimes just changing the trim or ceiling shade can totally shift the vibe without repainting everything.

Funny enough, I stumbled on this thread while looking for ideas for my own workspace. I’ve been trying to find a balance between calm and motivation through colors too. It’s interesting how much lighting changes the way paint looks during the day—what seems soft in the morning can feel heavy at night. I’m leaning toward a mix of natural tones and brighter decor pieces instead of repainting everything again.
