Hey everyone! I’ve been working as a caregiver for almost two years now, mostly helping out seniors with daily tasks like bathing, cooking, and keeping them company. I really enjoy the work and was thinking about taking the next step — maybe becoming a CNA. But I’m not totally sure what that transition looks like. Do I need to go back to school full-time? Is it a long process, or could I keep working while I get certified? If anyone here has made that switch or knows someone who has, I’d love to hear how it went.

That’s a great question, and I actually looked into this myself not too long ago. It turns out there’s a clear path from caregiver to CNA — it just takes a bit of planning. This article on caregiver vs cna (https://www.newcenturypa.com/caregiver-academy/caregiver-vs-cna/) breaks it down really well. Basically, caregivers can definitely become CNAs, but they’ll need to complete a state-approved training program and pass a certification exam. What’s nice is that many programs are flexible, so you can often keep working while studying. Making that move not only boosts your skills but also opens up new job opportunities and often higher pay. Definitely worth considering if you’re thinking long-term.

I’ve seen a few people in my community take that route — they started as caregivers, got some experience, and then went through CNA training at local community colleges or health centers. Some even had their employers help cover the cost. From what I’ve heard, the hands-on caregiving background really helps during CNA classes, so you’d probably have a solid head start.
