What causes the static when you either change the volumn or switch from A to B speakers? On another amp/tuner, if you don't turn the speakers off first, you get a POP from the speakers when you turn the amp/tunner off. What causes that?
Remeber, I am a newbie.
Thanks

MAny times. the controls, which are mechanical devices, are a little worn or accumulate "gunk" in them. This manifests itself as a scratchy noises (in volume type controls) or a "thunk or "pop" in switch tyoe controls, like source or speaker selectors..

Power amps (and other comoponents, too) have capacators, which store electricity in them. When they are charged or discharged, it's possible for a loud transient ("pop" or "Thump") to be heard in the loudspeaker. These are most common when powering sown a unit.

If the possibiity exists, it's best to turn ON you stufff in this order .. Source, preamp and finally the power amp. When turning it off, do exactly the reverse. First, power down the amp, then the preamp and finally the source. That's how the pros do it and they do it that way to prevent those transients.

FWIW, a lot of power amps have a built in timedelay when powering on to avoid these transients. Most of the transients you hear upon power down is from either the preamp otr one of the source components,
