GREAT DVD player! Just bought it. Plays SACD. Progressive SCAN. Crystal clear images even without progressive on my aging TV. Better audio quality than my previous Pioneer (360S) which really wasn't bad in the audio department. 10 sec load-time on MP3 CD's or DVD's. Full album/artist/title view scrolls in player display on beginning of each MP3 or CD-TEXT song. Component out, Digital coax/optical out, Surround multichannel out. Upsampling of normal CD's 2x, 4x or OFF.

For the price an Excellent buy.

P.S. LOTR - Return of the king DVD was also included with the player. Standard SCART cable was also included.

I'm not finding this on Philips' website. Is it so new that it's not listed yet?

That's right. Brand new model - generally in the shops in northern europe now.

Also in the very close future there will be the DVP900SA which will replace the current (award-winning) 963 model. (Est $500-600 price range)

By the way it seems a $200 MSRP price is closer to the truth.

Also I'm ready to write a review for this player - in contrast with the 50 latest additions I picked and selected 3 products at random -> not a single review (!)

I think a major point (and maybe it should be a requirement) in adding a product here is reviews - the product data can be found at the producers site and just about any web-shop.

So listing new products with reviews is what I think should be the essence of this site to live up to the audioreview name. Products with reviews older than 1-2 years should also be in an archived section of this site.

Just my 2c

The player's now listed in the UK section of the Philips website. Since the £150 price cited in the story you linked to is roughly $275 at the current exchange rate, that's the price I listed on the player's review page, here: http://www.audioreview.com/PRD_321711_1587crx.aspx

I don't believe that AR is interested in being as dictatorial about product review submissions as your suggestion would necessitate. I personally think it's a good thing that the product pages are available for people to submit reviews whenever they feel like it, even if those pages have been devoid of reviews for years. In fact, it would be nice if EVERY audio product released had a page listed at AR, but I very much doubt that AR has the personel to make that happen.

I'm sure that the DVP900SA will also appear on the Phillips website in the near future. When it does, let me know, and I'll add it.

Just entered my review.

Also a point for you to modify, is that the product year only goes to 2003, it was not possible to select 2004 in the list..

Thanks for the VERY detailed review. I'll let one of the coders know about the year selection, thank you for bringing it my attention.

BTW, your avatar looks similar to the cover of a Ride album.

Hmm, interesting, hope I'm not infringing any trademarks :)

Actually it is a cutout from a larger picture, this portion being some sunset ocean waves. Thought it looked a bit like a bird ready to fly myself :)

The year selection option has been fixed. Thanks again for the heads up.

Here's the cover of the Ride album. It's not quite a natural wave, though.

I have just bought DVP720SA and found a problem.

When playing a SACD (both Stereo and Multichannel), it will automatically add space between songs (around 1 second). It's quite disturbing when playing some "concept" SACDs (e.g. Dark side of the moon by Pink Floyd, Tommy by The Who, i.e. without any gap or pause between songs). Does anyone encounter the same problem? Can anyone fix it? Please help!

Actually, I have sent Philips an email last Friday but I have not received any reply from them.

Man (from Hong Kong)
