In Gestalt therapy, the main emphasis in working with clients is "here and now". Have you ever wondered what else there is in the here and now? We are accustomed to perceive our life as time linearly: we were born, went to school, graduated from college, got a job, played a wedding, our children were born, and we have a long and, probably, happy life ahead of us.
Living in the present: between the past and the future
Most people are so immersed in their past memories or thoughts about the future that there is no time for real life. I hasten to disappoint you: our past does not exist - these are just our memories (and our memory is very selective, so we remember only what is beneficial for us to remember), there is no future either - these are just our fantasies and illusions that have nothing to do with to real life.
All that our life represents is this very moment in which you are reading this article. And now another moment as you read this sentence. This is how your life flows, which consists of many seconds in which you live, and most often do not live.
Why drag into the present relationship from the past?
How does this relate to the topic of our today's conversation about the "former"? Some people tend to fill the void with their dreams and memories instead of living today. They, like Plyushkins, put their memories in the closet of consciousness, and wander there in search of feelings and experiences. Over time, there are more things in the closet and the temptation to stay there becomes stronger. It is safe there, it is pleasant there, you can choose and control your emotions there. Who voluntarily parted with these "treasures"?
