Yeah, I know- he played drums for Journey, but don't hold that against him. He's an incredible musician, playing fusion to Indian music with aplomb.
There's a nice article in the SF Chronicle about him and his Buddy Rich tribute band, among other things: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2004/06/20/PKG2274DI91.DTL

Guess not-never even heard of him. Played drums for Journey you say? I guess I've heard of that lead singer but for the life of me can't recall his name but that ugly mug of his is forever etched into my brain. For myself, having been left off the list of the 50 most handsome men list yet again I generally don't care what someone looks like but that dood is fugly.
I'll be expecting my Indian Fusion comp in the mail anyday now!

What a prick.
Steve Smith is really good. He also played with Mike Manring and Tribal Tech.

I am a major fan of Steve Smith. I have eight CD's with him on drums, his DVD, the Modern Drummer Festival DVD with him, and the Drummer's Collective DVD. His website is in my "favorites." I really like his band, Vital Information. He is certainly one of the greatest living drummers, and he continues to learn and improve. Peace.

HEY! Journey ROCKED!
Never heard of Steve Smith?! EEeeesh.
Anyway, I consider Steve one of the greatest drummers. Ive grown up with his playing and still amazed at his touch. Met him a few times at NAMM, swell dude, always positive and energetic!
I recently caught a glimpse of a DVD were Steve played two or three separate time signatures. It was like he was two or three drummers in one...AT ONCE.
It was unbelievable. I have to ask him next time how one even achieves that level of independance.
He was doing drum solos over a steady hihat time...it was just amazing.
Escape is a fabulous performance, because of his feel and just touch at the right times. I love that one. See him live whatever you do.
