I haven't had the time to completely look into DPL-IIx but am wondering if it is a must have on my next receiver to be used as a prepro.
The question I have is does DPL-IIx add a pair of rear (back) channels thus making it 7.1 or does it add a 6th channel making it 6.1. (I know these channels are matrixed and not discrete).

My trusted Proton prepro has started misbehaving and I would like to replace it with a Pioneer 914K or something similar. The Pioneer claims DPL-IIx but only has 6.1 channel outs so this has become quite confusing to me. (Never thought this day would come when I would be lacking behind all these advancements in audio.)

While I am currently very happy with a 5.1 setup, I would like the ability of going 6-7.1 in the future provided I have the space.

Hey Nick

That is what you get when hang around the jail too long. You will fall behind in every aspect of HT know how :D

Hopefully this link will help you:

Dolby Pro Logic IIx: There are actually two parts to Pro Logic IIx. The first is its role as a classic Matrix decoder. It distinguishes itself by delivering up to seven channels (as compared to Pro Logic II's five, or Pro Logic's four). Like Pro Logic II, it includes Music and Movie modes. Note that both the side channels and rear channels are stereo.

Pro Logic IIx also plays a role with Discrete 5.1 material by deriving four surround channels, as oppose to EX's three, yielding up to seven main channels. It includes Music and Movie modes. Although, like THX Ultra2, it is designed to accommodate non-EX encoded material, Dolby recommends the Movie mode for all movie material, including EX encoded soundtracks.

Smokey, good to hear from you buddy! Thanks for the link to different formats but I still need my question answered about the preouts on the Pioneer 914K. I believe it has only 6.1 outs so if I am reading the link correctly, PL-IIx is matrixed 7.1 so how will the Pioneer handle it ? Will it down-convert it to 6.1?

Nick, keep this in mind bud. You can never downconvert a enhancement mode that adds signals that didn't previously exist in the first place. Based on what I read on the 914k, it does not support stereo center rear surrounds. Doesn't matter anywaye Nick, its all made up anyway, so it really shouldn't matter whether the PROCESSOR invents the 7th channel or not. No matrix mix was created that way anyway.
