I've got a Yamaha DSPE1000 surround/preamp which is being used ONLY to power center, rear and front satellites for surround purposes.
The main out drives a sep[arate power amp.
The unit seems to be getting extremely hot- even under low volume/short term uses.
Why is this, and what can I do to eliminate it?
Seeing as the unit is in a cabinet, can I use a fan? The power amp sits in the same cabinet and is not nearly as hot.

Check the impedence of your speakers and compare it to what your Yammie is rated for.

My Technics SA-DA10N receiver runs very hot even at idle, the unit actually gets a little cooler when I play music at higher levels. The heat you're referring to is the wasted power from the power supply due to the inefficencies of class A/B amps at low volume, which is usually around 30%.

I have a computer fan on top of my receiver to keep things cool at all times, heat is the No.1 reason for electronic failure!
