I have a pair of Polk RT16s that I bought about 8 years ago. I had them in storage about 6 months and hooked them up last week and they make a noticeable cracking/sizzling sound. It is only in one driver in each speaker (the top one in one speaker and the bottom one in the other). The tweeters seem to be fine. I am only running 100 watts through them (Onkyo TX-SR701) so I can't believe I blew them out. Maybe I just have a bad connection somewhere? What could be causing this? I don't want to waste my money buying new parts if that's not the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I would suspect the contacts on the receiver before the speakers...If receiver or speakers were stored under humid conditions, may be some oxidation on contact points...try some Radio Shack contact spray....

The receiver is new. I thought that it might be a bad connection and it needed cleaning as you suggest. The noise is similar to what one might hear on an old car radio when you turn the volume knob when the contacts were dirty. I will try the Radio Shack cleaner you suggest. Thank you for your help.
