Help me out, here.
From the comments I've read so far, it appears to stand for "Chain Really Sucks", but I haven't heard it so don't throw any bricks at me. Throw em at Sloshy!

But if anyone is really curious about the history of the CRS series, just plug "Rave Recordings Group Comps" into the search box and you'll get a link to http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=2084

...if I don't know what it's called? I could put CRSv into the search box, and it would tell me I need 4 words. The search has never worked for me here. I gave up trying to find things.

But anyhoo- thanks! But there will be no brick-lobbing.

Pretty sure it's Current Rotation Sampler vol.x. Initially it was in response to the Rave Rec samplers getting filled with old material. The thinking at the time of creation was to focus more on more recent releases. Most of us here appreciate finding a band from eons ago that we missed but there seem to be a whole lot more looking for hope in the current scene.

Either that or it stands for Cruddy Records Suck vehemently.

you be the judge.

Yeah, what Jim says. Sorry FP, I thought you would click on the link in which case it would've been pretty obvious. But for others with a similar click-aversion, I'll post the first one in the series below along with the brief but eloquent comments from PPG, curator of this inaugural offering.....

Compiled by PwrPopGuy, January 2002. This first-in-a-series of comps for the new year, 2002, is inspired by the weekly rotation thread on the Rave Recordings Forum. Here is a collection of fresh, eclectic tunes that are quite varied in style and genre. For best results, allot yourself a 73-minute stretch of uninterrupted private time, grab your favorite beverage, kick back and enjoy!

Hopefully Jeff will add his tracklist and whatever personal reflections he might want to share at the end of the Rave Recordings Group Comps thread to keep the series documented.

I don't have my copy of CRSv9 yet, but from the posts I've read and what I remember of the track list, that would be "THE Chain" that you are referring to. Not "Chain". If I'm not mistaken, there are two different tracks by similarly named bands.

Although I could be wrong about the whole thing and you might really mean "Chain Really Sucks". But that would hurt my feelings. :(

Now, can you guess which one was my contribution? ;)

Hehehe, sorry and you are of course right, FA. The Chain is the name of the song by Tantric (probably from FP) that was getting the initial bashing and like I said, I haven't heard it yet so any animosity can be directed toward....

One song stands out but not for the right reason: The Chain - it takes a special talent to take a cool song and turn it to utter crap.

I agree "The Chain" was a trainwreck....

Maybe it should stand for "Critics Really Suck" :)

BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if the one I picked gets its fair share of criticism too, although admittedly I did play it kind of safe this time. The only way to avoid any criticism is to nominate something that is highly ignorable :)

I just got mine and chucked it right in the player for a scan. I don't ask for these because they usually don't have artists I ever heard of or music I would listen to. I did participate once and my song sucked just as bad as the rest of the disk.

I was getting dissapointed as I scanned the disk. Finally I came upon a song I knew and it was much better than the original artist. I like cover tunes since the originals are usually worn way too thin.

RPWL got my attention. Is that it or do the letters stand for something?

Damien Rice sounded real good thru the Danes. They just do good vocals right. I have heard this tune lots on XPN but always in the car or on a small radio. Like it!

Julian Coryell- is that any relation to Larry? The smooth acoustic guitar was real good.

Thanks JD for sending it. I'll give it more time to sink in. Also thanks for the LL disk. Should all be new to me.

Hey Finch, Where's my Mule is a kickass tune. I can't waight to get ahold of Geezers sampler. Is most of their music like this....ABB..type kickass jammin?
I'm realy enjoying your Jammed Bands!

Yeah, the Geez sampler is a good indication. Most of their stuff I've heard is high-energy. I want more, too. Ordered a disc from Djangos, but it came in all scratched

Thanks- glad you're liking JB.

I did click on your link- sorry. I was referring to earlier times when the search wouldn't work.

Brian,

"Mule" is only the beginning with Gov't Mule. Dare I say better than the Allman Brothers? Absolutely! Anywhoo, if you dig the comp from Geezer and want to explore more let me know. I've got all their music. Lots of aftermarket stuff too if you catch my drift.

Great band. I've been a fan for years.

Boy, Garee, your contribution is getting bashed, and many haven't even heard it yet. Sounds just like most of your comps!!

Davey nailed it. Current rotation sampler. Don't you have the entire series? You've been around longer than time. I'd have thought you had them all. I came along with version 3.5. Rae was kind enough to send me the missing ones from my collection, along with Rave Rec Samplers Vol. 1-3. (Speaking of Rae, where has he been?)

Glad CRSv9 is getting some discussion here. You Canadians (FA, Audiobill etc) probably won't get them for another week or so. I mailed them at the same time as everyone else. MAF was kind enough to help with the north of the border mailings.

I'll give my opinions later. I will say there are 4 or 5 very very good tracks on there. And overall, I'm pleased. It won't float everyone's boat, and that's ok. But I was introduced to several bands that were new to me. That's what this is all about anyway.

And I'll make the offer again - if anyone wants one, let me know.

I'll reveal the guilty parties once everyone receives their copies. Until then, keep on guessing.

What should I start with? What should I avoid (at least until I'm a hardcore fan ;0).

Thanks

Gov't Mule original releases are:

Gov't Mule
Dose
Life Before Insanity

You can't go wrong with any of these. Avoid none.

Alan Woody dies so begins the tribute albums.

The Deep End vol 1. Most excellent. A must buy imo.
The Deep End vol 2. Most excellent.
The Deepest End. This is live and includes a 3 hour DVD.

There's lots of other live stuff such as Live At The Roseland Ballroom and Live With A Little Help From Our Friends and the aftermarket stuff.

Finch, start with the Deep End vol 1 and Dose you'll be a happy man. However, to truly understand Gov't Mule you should also check out Life Before Insanity and the s/t first.

Hey, I owe ya something. Be glad to send some Mule your way. Just let me know.

Darren
