Hello RaveRec Buds....

I haven't been around here, much, since my mom has been quite ill; nevertheless, we seem to be over a hump and she's doing better.

So.... what is your Friday Disc of the Week??

Mine is Kanye West's College Dropout -- Probably the best blend of hip-hop and r'n'b I've heard in the last 5 years. You should give it a try, especially if you normally don't listen to these genres and..........if you do, man, are you missing out.

I'm trying to catch up on old threads and I notice that Darius is also on to this Very creative artist.

Should you want to try a "demo" please let me know.

I have a NEW email addie............ hountalas@auracom.com

That sounds like something I would absolutely be interested in...have you heard cee-lo's new one?

Anyway, my Friday disc of the week will go to...........

Loretta Lyn: Van Lear Rose
Picked this up yesterday and have listened through a few times already. She's in fine voice and the expectedly rugged production from Jack White blends with her voice perfectly. If you've liked Loretta all along, you're in for a treat, and if you've never listened to her before, this modern interpretation of her rural mountain country with a the occasional blusey flourish just may make you a fan. A real unexpected treat.

My Friday disc is The Ride -Los Lobos.

This is way ahead of last years release. Features such artists as Bobby Womack, Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello and Mavis Staples. The guests I think enhance the sound and you never think your listening to anything other than a Los Lobos album.

Wicked Rain with BW incorperates Across 110 st superb.
Matter of Time with EC kind of a Shipbuilding tempo.
Charmed with RT, has the distinct RT sound.

Buy it, it's very good(out next week I think)

Hey Bill, good to see you around, and I'm glad to hear your mother is doing better.

My Friday disc of the week is Fugazi's Furniture EP. I bought a couple of the Fugazilive CDs (Vols. 1 and 20), which are okay, but after hearing "Furniture" (which is one of their first songs and was played at their first show) I pulled out the 2001 Furniture EP. I listened to it straight through, then listened to the song "Furniture" probably 5 times. I think it just may be my favorite Fugazi song right now.

Glad to hear mom's feeling better.

I have been just fixated with Pink Floyd's "Animals" album for some reason. Been playing it in the car all week. I think I'm on about the 5th spin. Massive atmosphere and dynamics. The lyrics are about as cynical as you can get. Great CD for blaring back at the clowns playing loud rap music at stoplights with the windows down on a 90 degree day.

Audiobill took my Friday disc of the week, College Dropout. I'm still loving it and pushing it on my friends. "Two Words" (with Mos Def and Freeway), towards the end of the album, is my current favorite song on the album, but it changes every couple of days. It's great for blaring back at clowns that are playing late-70s Pink Floyd loud in their cars with the window down on a 90-degree day. ;)

My second choice disc of the week is New Order's Low Life, because I listened to it the most times this week.

I was thinking about posting about this album to ask if anyone had heard it. It's getting rave reviews (99 on metacritic so far, plus a 9.3 at Pitchfork today and 4 1/2 stars at AMG) and people on the CMJ board are raving about it. Plus, I listened to a little bit after getting this email from Lost Highway:

>Howdy Lost Highway fans,

>Our friends at Interscope Records have just released one of the most stellar
>records we've heard this year and we thought you'd like to hear it too. Van
>Lear Rose is the new album from Loretta Lynn & was produced by Jack White.

Something I just wrapped up a few days ago. Spun it three times yesterday alone. I'll probably distribute it after I've fine-tuned the sequencing. A few of the tracks which standout for me are:

Doves: Hit the Ground Running
Talking Heads: Found a Job
Blur: Morroccan Peoples Revolutionary Bowls Club (thanks Mike UK!)
Zwan: El Sol
Roland Orzabal: Ticket to the World
Shaggy: Heartbreak Suzy

Bill: I'm happy for you that your Mom is feeling better, hope it continues. I'll e-mail you about your offer.

Mine is a two-disc set -- New Model Army, Lost Songs -- from the haunting "Refugee", to the lyrical instrumental, "Caslen", to the rollicking "Freedom 91", completely with girly chorus, to the drum-groovin' "Wanting"...I am so glad they found these! It would also work as a great introduction to the band. The lyrics are extremely political, but there's something about Justin's delivery that make you want to agree with him, rather than dispense with him for being too preachy.

I listen to all sorts of stuff like the rest of you loons, but on Friday I generally like to rock hard.

This Friday I had Thin Lizzy's "Renegade" disc to jam to, man, those doods could hammer it out, ya know.

Peace, Love, Happines, and all that.

I've been looking for that Tull "A" remaster, only find it @ 1 place but they wanted 25 bucks for it, no way in hell I'm paying that much dough for that one.

Regards,

Dave

Good to hear about your mom, Bill.

Mine has to be Jolie Holland's Escondida- a great, quirky voice, unusual phrasing; bluesy, jazzy, folky stuff that makes me feel like I'm in a speakeasy tossing back bath-tub gin.

Hey Audiobill! Glad to see you around again and to hear mom is doing OK.

So, something I've always wondered about (well, not really, but might be fun anyway :)) is whether the same people buy that mindless Usher (or Jessica Simpson, or whatever is popular at the moment) crap as buy something like the Kanye West disc? I mean, they all top the billboard charts so I assume the same people are probably buying them to sell that many, but you'd never hear a critic say anything good about Usher or Jessica. Why does the public have good taste in music on the one hand (assuming Kayne West is good music) yet bad taste on the other (assuming Usher is bad, and what I've heard is awful). Maybe it is different people buying each? I don't know :)

Anyway, back to the real question! I don't really have anything new and fresh to pull out of my ass this week except the Bob Marley comp I made from the 4-disc Songs of Freedom box which isn't new or fresh. Played the crap outta it for a while, though. Lots of cool early stuff from the 60s.

1. Judge Not
2. One Cup Of Coffee
3. Simmer Down
4. Stir It Up (Original)
5. Caution

9. Screw Face
10. Lick Samba
11. Trenchtown Rock (Alternate Mix)
12. Acoustic Medley - Guava Jelly/This Train/Cornerstone/Comma Comma/Dewdrops/Stir It Up/I'm Hurting Inside

This Friday I had Thin Lizzy's "Renegade" disc to jam to, man, those doods could hammer it out, ya know.

Hey Dave, my hubby's been loving that Thin Lizzy comp that you sent him. Thanks for sending that.

My Friday disk would have to be my Mystery Disk, so I can't say anything about it yet. As my first runner-up I'll choose British Sea Power, The Decline Of.... I know I'm a little late to jump on the BSP bandwagon, but I only got around to purchasing this disk last week and am loving it. This reminds me a lot of Bowie, back when Bowie's music was good.

I've also been inspired by Troy to throw Animals in the player. It's been a long time since I've listened to this disk. I think it's about to throw me into a Pink Floyd spiral. I've already pulled Meddle and Wish You Were Here off the shelf and put them on deck. All of my Floyd disks are old. Has the whole catalogue been remastered yet, or just the obvious The Wall and DSOTM?

P.S. Bill, sorry to hear that your Mom went through a rough spot. I'm glad that she's improved.

OK, so I don't actually have this album, but the title track, which I culled from a Magnet Magazine sampler has been rattling around my brain for the last few days. Sounds a little like the little I've heard from At The Drive In. I'm going to get the album.

Other songs I've been enjoying from the same and other samplers....

Big Black Motorcycle - Alice Texas
Wallpaper Room - Lowsunday (reminds me of Galaxie 500).

I was in Nobles Barn today and I noticed this band. They had 5 releases under their belt so I got curious as I have never heard of them before. Anyway, I was in the mood for something new so I scanned the different releases to listen to some previews. I went with Meander because quite frankly, I liked they way it sounded. Had more of a straight ahead rock sound than the Celtic roots rock sound Carbon Leaf are noted for in later releases. Pretty darn good me thinks. Meander was their first release from 1995 btw. After that they do get more Celtic-y roots sounding.

I also bought Loreena McKennitt's The Book Of Secrets. More Celtic fusion-y stuff. I just love that sound.

Also got Clapton's Me and Mr. Johnson. I can hear those groans already but hey, I like Clapton. Haven't listened to it yet.

I just gotta add, since I've been listening to it off 'n' on all freakin' day, the Clean Anthology from last year that I mentioned in the Feelies thread is just so cool. I love this 2-disc set, especially some of the later songs. I only had one early EP and the Modern Rock CD from the 90s before hearing this collection and it left me mesmerized and in wonder at why these guys never became a household name (just kidding - not really in wonder why some slightly obscure New Zealand band that plays cool, intelligent, Velvet Underground-inspired jangly pop/rock never became a household name....although there is that Mr. Clean guy...). What a great, great collection. Nice review at Pitchfork and one of the few in the last couple years that I actually thought was worth reading. I know a few around here already have this but just wanted to give it a mention anyway :)

AB--hope all is well. I meant to mention this album in the Tuesday thread, but for reasons that are obvious to anyone who looked at the thread I started about the computer, I didn't get to post in it. I sure heard a cool disc this week, though. The Asylum Street Spankers--Mercurial. I guess they're like a jug/rockabilly/Dixieland/jam sort of combo that focuses on styles like 1930s jazz & applies that to interesting covers. Like the Beastie Boys' 'Paul Revere,' Black Flag's 'TV Party,' Cab Calloway's 'Some Of These Days,' and Muddy Waters' 'Got My Mojo Workin'.' Can you imagine 'Paul Revere' as a rockabilly song? And somehow, it works. Great disc, very interesting, and with a good trace of Moog Cookbook ingenuity. The other thing I heard this week that was new to me that made any kind of impression was Joss Stone. Don't believe the hype, but I do think she's good, and the White Stripes cover is very good. Since she's almost a novelty, or at least this record is, the two people I spoke to about this--both critics--were kinda dismissive of it. But I do think there's something there. Still, the Asylum Street Spankers is miles better.

It's an old album from back when they were only like 40 minutes long.

I don't even commute!

Spinning the mystery disc right now. It's infectious and sugary as hell, but the production is too light-weight "FM radio" for me. My wife will like this. Ever heard the band "Human Radio"? They did a song called "Me and Elvis" from about the early 90s. Sounds JUST like this.

Troy,

There's lots of live bits from an actual 1980 concert interwoven with MTV style video sequences. For instance, Too Old To Rock is a video. Only 2 songs from A (Black Sunday and Flyingdale Flyer). The rest of the tunes are from previous albums. And of course, there's Aqualung and Locomotive Breath done up live. FWIW.

The video quality is nice and I'm sure an improvement over the VHS tape but I wouldn't say it's stellar. Sound is in Pro-Logic. Length is about 1 hour.

Sonically, the remaster is a great improvement, at least to my ears. A very enjoyable listen.

I was a little disappointed myself Troy to find the cheapest price at $18. It would be nice if they offered the CD without the DVD as I'm sure some really don't really give a rip about getting an extra DVD for whatever reason. It does bring up the cost. Justly? To some extent but certainly not at the price Geezer found.

Anyway, I like it and for me it was worth it. $25 is to much to pay for this though.

Hey, what's the best cheap beer? A buddy of mine brought over some Miller s<a>hit a coupla days ago and it has this stiff head on it almost like shaving cream. How do they do that? Beer was OK, but you almost have to scrape the top with a spoon to get to the beer. Weird. Guess Bud is still the best when you can get it in that $3.50 price range for a six, which is kinda rare nowadays, but not that rare. What do you normally drink? I almost always spring for cheap imports so it's usually about $5.00 minimum for a six. Recommendations welcome.....even if you are a street shillin' pimpin' teamer ;)

Uncanny! Actually I'm stuck with MGD (bottles, of course). Of all of the cheap mass market domestics, this is the only one I can tolerate (on a short term basis) because it has a semblance of taste; not beer-flavored water like A/B or Coors' products. I'm not much of pilsner guy either but at least it doesn't give me a hangover and I can choke it down.

Normally I buy Hofbrau Munchin lager. Yum!
