After we researched all of the over-ears in this price range that are currently available (around 110 units in total), read countless professional and user reviews, and conducted three separate listening panels of audio professionals, the Sony MDR-7506 emerged as the clear winner.
The runner up was Audio Technica’s ATH-M40x (http://thewirecutter.com/link/?l=B00HVLUR54&subtag=WC20740) headphone which
sell around $100 online.

Where's this from? Seems everyone is coming out with headphones now, even Audioquest to Monoprice. I read a review of the Monoprice who said they are pretty good for $69 but for that I'd have to compare them to the Grado.
If Sony was the "clear" winner though I'd sure have to give them a listen if I were looking.

Sony headphone going for under $100 at Amazon, so it make it more attractive for budget buyers. It also got alot of good professional reviews from Amazon as they indicated that Sony headphone have neutral sound without too much colorations.

I bought a pair of AT-M50x over ear phones for my son. They sounded better to our ears compared to the Sony. The AT's are a great buy since prices have dropped to about $160.

I have a pair of Denon AH-D600, which are now discontinued. $500 when in production and are a great set of over the ear cans! The down side is they take about 300-500 hours to run in, but once they are, they are just excellent cans...I love listening to DSD128 through them!

The MDR-7506 has been a studio staple since its introduction in 1991, and there’s a great reason why: Not only does this pair of headphones provide accurate bass, mids, and treble, but it also gives you a better sense of the depth and dynamics of your music than many models twice its current retail price of about $90. Plus, this set is durable, comfortable, and reliable.
Not tested by Wirecutter, but my vote would be the Sennheiser HD598. Yes it is more than $150 ($159 on Amazon, but has been even less on Massdrop). Cannot say I tried many headphones, but these would be hard to beat. Only retired them when I moved up to my HD 700 ( although they still get packed for vacations to the beach).
