I notice on a few other audio sites that there is an on going thread regarding music listening. So I am proposing such a thread to help boost site numbers and general interest on the site

Great idea, R1, and I've often wondered why there wasn't one around here -- maybe having one will up participation.

OK, so last night I listen to ...

Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7, "Leningrad" ~ Dmitri Yablonsky conducting the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra

... playing on Foobar2000. Pretty decent performance and sound.

Need to do something, I think smokey is burning out his search engine :), but music is something many of us participate with so why not share our interest and taste.

Satisfactory performance, average sound ...

Great bassist. Arguably a contender for best in the business these days. Love it when he uses the bow. Can't beat a good trio. They sound lively and tight. Interesting compositions and he's only getting better.

That's high-larious! There are a few that make me smile, too. I used to have an anti-country bias, but now I can appreciate a good song (to my ears) no matter the genre. Hank Williams' voice used to get on my nerves, but now I dig his phrasing and his band is just so mellow. I like well-done pedal steel. There's some quality music in country; however, I don't hear it on the radio. Takes some digging around. Then there's the western side of country that provokes images of big Texas dance halls, the Bakersfield sound of which Buck Owens is a pioneer. Hell, I never thought I'd like Buck Owens after being "forced" to watch HeeHaw as a kid. Then, cosmic American music of Gram Parsons, the outlaws like Waylon and Willie and singer-song writers like Townes Van Zandt. Well, you get the picture. There's alot out there that's just kinda lumped into "country". I couldn't tell you who's at the top of the country charts today. The contemporary country music I've heard doesn't do anything for me.

I hear a lot of it now, my boss is a big country fan. But I hear in the lyrics of some of the newer stuff references to rap slang and artist. I mean when did country boys roll on 28" rims booming T-pain, I'm just saying.

tUnE-yArDs : Nikki Nack
9728

Energetic. Lively. Polyrhythmic. Urban. Folk. Afro-cuban... I dunno.
She's got a great talent for looping herself back into her songs.

Slate: (http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/music_box/2014/05/tune_yards_album_nicki_nack_reviewed.html)
Her songs skedaddle up and down sonic hills and valleys like an avant-junkman’s jalopy, sounding the polyphonic steam-whistle of her remarkable voice in beckoning and in warning, while the injustices and sicknesses of society drag behind like a tangle of barbed fences that the cart has barreled through.

I don't think the video below really sells the album. Maybe just close your eyes and listen.

Great thread. We used to have threads like this. We also had a series of Tunesday threads, where every Tuesday we would post what we were listening to that day.

I've been spinning the hell out of the new REM Unplugged 1991/2001 disks. I love me some REM. And I capital L-O-V-E me some unplugged REM. A must-buy if you're a fan.

Despite some memory of her first album being panned, I picked this one up. First spin impressions. Really good and lovely in a creepy way. Its like the tragic and flawed heroines from Raymond Chandler novels set their anger, heartache, frustration, self destruction and ennui to a enthralling sexy soundtrack.

The Strypes- Snapshot UK teens, rocking like rockers used` to rock. RAWK! Sounds like Dr. Feelgood with some Who and Johnny Kidd thrown in there. The singer is 16, for chrissakes!

Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey- Going Back Home. Wilko won't be with us much longer (cancer), but you sure can't tell from this recording. His slashing guitar is a joy to behold, with Daltrey holding up his end with vocals in a low register that surprised the hell out of me. Another rocking old-style pub rock winner.

Umphrey's McGee- Sonic Skin. Incredible disc. Buy this disc, if you don't like it, I will buy it from you. I know I can safely say that. More incredible, intertwining guitar work from the boys. Can't wait to hear these short songs stretched out until they pop.

Yesterday afternoon to the following vocal piece (plus a few other things). Schoenberg was a great composer. His music isn't to everyone's taste but he's grown on me.

Arnold Schoenberg: Pierrot lunaire, melodrama for voice & chamber ensemble, Op. 21 ~ Anja Silja; Robert Craft / Twentieth Century Classics Ensemble
