I am a watch fan but do not own any luxury timepieces. My watches consist of two Swiss automatics with ETA movements, a Swiss quartz and the Movado Bold I posted about this time last holiday season. I also have a mechanical Seiko and Orient watches made in Japan.
Recently while checking prices on my dream watch an Omega with co-axial movement I discovered an interesting watch that is inexpensive for the accuracy and technology. It is the Bulova Precisionist quartz watch which is one of the most accurate quartz watches available. A regular quartz watch is accurate to 10-15 seconds a month where this quartz movement is accurate to 5-10 seconds a year. It uses a 3 prong quartz crystal instead of a 2 prong crystal and vibrates 8x faster than a standard quartz watch. The second hand moves 16 times a second so it looks like it is a sweeping second hand instead of the one second jump of a standard quartz.
The least expensive Precisionist lists at $299 but are available for less. I found the amount of technology interesting and the price affordable. Anyone who likes watches and wants greater accuracy check this one out.

Did you look at the Bulova? Not so much about style but it is the technology and accuracy for the price I found interesting.

Yes, it is a very nice watch. I was thinking about getting one for my son.

Well the Precisionist arrived yesterday. As products usually are it is a more attractive watch than it's photograph. The bezel, shoulders of the crown and sides are highly polished. The rest of the watch has a satin finish. The face is darker than I expected but the highly polished hands and hour markers make it easy to tell time.
The watch retailed at $350 and I bought it through Amazon for about $213 plus shipping. A great bargain for the design and technology of the watch. As nice a watch as it is the finish and construction is not up to the level of Swiss watches. Of course the price is not up to the cost of a Swiss watch.
If the watch remains as accurate as presented this will be a great bargain.

John, how heavy/bulky is the watch? I love the style of Bulovas but I find them to be very heavy.
I'm having a hard time seeing my smaller womens watches as I get older and I've been looking for a nice large womens or smaller mens watch.
I thought that I would try so save some money and bought a Timex watch last summer, but the ticking drives my up the wall, so I need so go back to the more expensive watches where the ticking is much quieter, or preferably non-existent.

Some quartz watches have a loud step motor that you can hear easily. The Bulova Prescisionist is very quiet but sadly does not come in a woman or small man's size. I also have a watch and the brand name is Orient. They make automatic mechanical movements for women and some quartz. My automatic mechanical movement is virtually silent. Their prices are reasonable and often offered with a 30% discount. Here is the home page for Orient.

Movado also has a range of watches in several sizes that use a Swiss quartz movement that is also quiet. Of course at a higher price.

When I bought my first Swiss chronometer status watch I was surprised to find most watch brands did not make their own movements. At the time ETA made many of the mechanical movements for much of the watch market. I could design a watch and choose a Swiss movement have it produced and bring it to market. Regardless of the name on my Swiss watches they have great movements. One has the ETA 2892-2 and the other has the 2824-2. These movements can be purchased at different quality levels based on the method of shock resistance, balance wheel and decorations of movement to name a few.
My next good watch will be a watch from a manufacturer who makes their movements in house. Rolex is the least expensive watch maker who makes almost the entire watch from case to movement. Rolex is a mid line manufacturer with Patek Phillippe and Audemars Piguet near the top of the Swiss manufacturers.
I find myself more interested in who made the movements than in who made the case or designed the face.

That is interesting about the position of ETA, (I scanned the Wiki, here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA_SA)). I had no idea about any of this. I note that Omega is affiliated with ETA. It's interesting too that ETA was investigated by the Swiss Competition Commission for having essentially a monopoly for lower priced (<$256) "ébauches" (mechanical movements).
I've always appreciated two things in a watch: (1) an elegant design, i.e. case and band, and (2) accuracy. I had a Bulova Accutron ("tuning fork") watch back in the day that was the latest thing. However I'm more that happy with a quartz movement and, actually, I love the precise, reliable time you get with the "atomic", satellite-synchronized watches.
My current watch is no piece of jewellery, though: just a Casio "atomic" for which I paid about 30 bucks ...

GENEVA — The Swatch Group may be best known for its playful, plastic watches. But it also produces mechanical movements and other watch components that it sells to most of its rival timepiece makers.
Swatch is probably best known for its colorful, inexpensive watches, but it owns higher-end brands that compete against companies that buy its movements.
Starting Jan. 1, though, the company will begin to cut back, and possibly eventually end, its sales of the inner workings to competitors to concentrate on producing watches with higher profit margins and to make sure it has enough supplies on hand for its own brands, including Longines, Omega, Tissot and Breguet.

I just checked my Precisionist again with the atomic clock and it still is on the second. I have always enjoyed my mechanical watches and still do but to have a watch with such accuracy is nice.
In my time with my better mechanical watches I expect them to run a few seconds fast a day when new. As they operate the hair spring may stretch and the lubrication dries and they slow down. My Hamilton has been running at an exact rate after years of running slightly fast. My other watch which uses a higher end ETA movement now runs slow. It needs to go back and be cleaned and lubed and recalibrated since it was once at chronometer standards. It was certified by the COSC for accuracy. When the Hamilton with the ETA 2824-2 movement begins to slow down it will need to be sent for cleaning and lube. Maintaining mechanical watches takes some effort.
I am finding it very nice to have a watch that is always correct. Quartz watches also require less service. The sweeping second hand of the Precisionist seems less quartz like with out the jumping seconds hand. A quick glance might make someone think I am wearing a mechanical. I am enjoying my Christmas gift to myself.

The Eco-Drive has been in use for many years so I think the technology has been perfected. I am not sure if I mentioned it in a previous post but Bulova is owned by Citizen and the Precisionist is Citizen technology. My brother wears a Citizen Eco-Drive and has not had any problems.
The watch with the diamonds may be a little large for you but you will not know until you try it on yourself. I like watches in the 40mm and 42mm range for myself so 39mm seems rather large. I like the style but I also like the classic strap watch. I recently bought my Orient watch because it had the simple design that was popular when I was given my first watch. I find I enjoy some classic designs longer than modern and trendy. Of course like anything you will need to try it on first. I know you will get great service from either watch.
I would also add the a bracelet will last longer than a strap. Hand washing, wearing it while cleaning and natural aging will cause the strap to need to be replaced periodically. Of course as much as I wash my hands working in healthcare a leather band does not last long. The water resistance of the ceramic watch is much greater than the strap watch and that may be important to consider.

Since it's boxing week here (like your Black Friday), there are some good deals to be had, so I hit the mall yesterday to look at watches. I couldn't find the Citizen that I posted, but I did find a couple of others that I liked (Citizen and Bulova) that were in the running. I decided that I wanted a bracelet and not a strap.
Then I met this Tissot (http://www.tissot.ch/?collections/products/2252/n/TISSOT_T12/T082.210.22.038.00) and fell in love (or at least strong infatuation). Even with the sales price of just over 25% off, it was over my budget. But knowing that I will own this for many years to come, I decided that I could up the budget a bit.
I went out shopping again today, to a different mall, to see if I could find something a bit less expensive. I thought that I had found antoher Tissot I liked for less, and decided to walk away and think about it. But when I came home and looked at yesterday's purchase again, I decided it's a keeper. I just have to reconcile the cost in my head.

Tissot is a very good watch. Swiss made with a 7 or 8 jewel Swiss Quartz movement. They are part of the Swatch Group that has Omega, Hamilton and others along with ETA which manufactures their movements. Well done, brava.
Now I would like to see your watch. The link opened to the Tissot mobile site and showed multiple watches.

Thanks. I actually own a few decent watches (a Bulova, a Skagen, and a Swiss Army that needs a new crystal), but this is, by far, the best of the bunch.
I was just going through the links on this site again, and I realized that the Bulova you posted for me to look at is a watch that I tried on today and seriously considered! LOL!

I like the Ceramica Rado's. My wife and I have matching Ceramica's. The Bands are pretty much indestructable ceramic with titanium clasps and sapphire crystals. I have a smaller wrist size and watches similar to Rolex types are too big. There are a few Raymond Weils that I like but they are too expensive.
I like Tissot watches too. There are a 3 that I would like to have but again they are a little too big. I need a 35mm or less case.
I would have preferred a new DAC or Marantz Reference SACD player instead as I have some really nice watches. But who's complaining!

Neither the Bulovas or the Citizens that I looked at can compare to the Tissot for quality…but the price was more appealing. It's the age old struggle of affordability versus quality. :)
I have fallen in love with this Hamilton (http://www.hamiltonwatch.com/collection/american-classic/jazzmaster/viewmatic-auto/h32305195) on their website. Unfortunately it retails at $895. Even if I can find a good deal it will still be too expensive. :(

My husband also has a small wrist. I bought him a watch for his 50th birthday. Originally I bought him a Titanium Tissot PR100, but the face was a little too large for him. After a lot of shopping around, we eventually lucked into a smaller PR200. Identical watch with a smaller face. It was a discontinued model but was perfect for him.

I bought mine at a jewelry store for under $500. It is a very accurate watch with an ETA movement. Well made case and both Hamilton and Tissot are under the Swatch banner which has a number of fine watches. My dream watch is an Omega with the co-axial movement and Omega is also part of the Swatch family. Tissot and Hamilton are made to the same quality levels. Unless you want a watch with mechanical movement I think the Tissot is the way to go. If you bought a Hamilton quartz and a Tissot quartz watch they would both have the same quality multi jeweled ETA quartz movement.

Wow. That is stunning!
I tried on a couple of beautiful Hamilton's today but even at 25% off they turned out to be way out of my budget. I also tried on several Rue du Rhone watches. There was one that I loved but they only had the men's version. If they had the women's version I would have returned the Tissot for it. They were 50% off, so an amazing deal.
After going into two more stores today and trying on many more watches, I have decided that the one I bought is the one I'm keeping. My first instincts were correct. :)

That's a magnificent watch no doubt, but, as with hi-fi equipment you have to wonder whether isn't some point beyond which you leave the realm of the necessary & practical.
So I would say that for an integrated amp this Burmester 032 is likely fabulous but perhaps a little over the top at $22,500 ...

Atomic watches are always cool. Seiko has a new watch that sets itself to any time zone you are in using GPS. Just think the watch would be correct at home and then be correct when you disembark your plane in Paris.

Those are impressive watches. It's interesting that they get their calibration from GPS satellites whereas the Casios get their from earth-based radio transmission.

I really love that Hamilton with the brown face that I posted. It would be, by far, my first choice if it were half the price. But it's definately not in the budget.
The Macy's link just goes to their home page. Both of those Tissot's are beautiful. Simple, but very classy.
It's funny. I started out looking for a simple watch for everyday use. But the more I looked, the more I realized that what I really wanted was a statement watch. I have lots of everyday watches. :)
Plus, looking for a women's watch with a 34mm or larger face really limited my options. So many of them tended to look masculine because of the size. I like the Tissot that I ended up with because it's large but the design is very feminine.

What a timeless watch. I would never tire of that style. It is too small for me but I would wear it's larger brother. I picked my Orient looking for that classic timeless style.

I don't care for the watch. I don't know what my wife and daughter were thinking when they picked that watch. I think my wife did not want me to have a flashy watch to wear at work, thinking that my patients may get the wrong idea. It does look a lot better in person and is of high quality. It will be going back to the store next week.

The Tissots are still under consideration. But the RW is just a classically beautiful watch.
I tend to like darker watches as the look better on my wrist. I also need a second hand for when I check patients pulse and heart rate.

Actually Timex had some automatic wind models with Chinese movements. I bought one for under $100 and it was fairly accurate. The watch had a power reserve dial, could be stem wound and could hack to set the time accurately. I wear it every once in a while.

I own a Skagen and absolutely love it. It's one of my favourite watches, but I'm starting to have trouble reading it if I'm wearing my contact lenses. I can still read it okay with my glasses on. It has the mesh style band and is very comfortable as it can be custom fit to any size…no links to remove.
My problem with Timex watches is the ticking. The two that I have are loud and drive me crazy. But I like the Indiglo feature, so I tend to wear them to movies or the theatre, you know...dark places.

All this talk of watches made me want my own watch tool kit. I will be able to remove links, open case backs for easy battery change and replace leather straps more easily. I have an inexpensive Seiko automatic that kept good time until I flipped down a 12 foot hill on my bicycle knocking myself out. I would like to try adjusting the watch so it is not losing time. It was so inexpensive that a professional cleaning and adjustment could easily cost more than the watch.
Now that I am very happy with my system it seems watches are my new obsession.

Here are three decent quality watches that I've worn over the yearsl. I worn lots of cheap Timex, Casio, etc., too of course. These stand out for me in one way or another.
Left to right:
Mido, Swiss-made mechanical manual wind. This watch was worn by my father as a officer in the Canadian Army in WWII; I wore it for a few myself after his death, as I recall when I was in university.
Bulova, original battery-powered "tuning fork" Accutron, (not quartz regulated like later versions). I bought this in the early '70's. It's the best looking watch I've own as I see it. It was accurate to couple of minutes a month. It became unreliable in the late '70s; a couple of repairs couldn't keep it running accurately.
Seiko, quartz, I bought this in around 1990 and it still works well as far as I know but I haven't had a battery in it for 4-5 years. It was accurate to about 15 seconds a month.
They are all small watches which is best on my slender wrist. The Bulova is the largest at about 38mm top to bottom of the case. All of them originally had leather bands; all were replaced by stretchy-type bracelets: Fixo-flex on the Mido, and Speidel on the Bulova and Seiko.

Of the three, I like the look of the Mido best. But mostly I love that it was your father's. What a beautiful momento to have…especially since it sounds like you were pretty young when you lost him.

The videos show two price extremes in mechanical watch making. Orient, Seiko and Citizen are all watch manufactures as are Rolex and Patek Phillipe and other top line Swiss watchmakers. My Krieger and Hamilton like most watch brands are not manufactures. They purchase movements from one company, cases from another and whatever else they need to produce a watch. To be considered a watch manufacture you must make movements in house.
Looking forward to going back to work at the end of January. I have too much time on my hands.

I am not into jewelry, except for my wedding band, but I do like an attractive watch. Right now I have a modestly priced Guess watch for everyday wear, and a Joe Rodeo diamond watch I treated myself to a few years ago, and wear occasionally. The JR has genuine diamonds on the bezel and band, and swiss movement.

Very nice watches. Back in the mid 1980's I could have bought a stolen Gold Rolex with Diamonds for $20. I was at a car wash and a drug abuser comes up to me with this watch and he tried to sell it to me. It was a beautiful watch and probably sold for well over $10K.

One must ask oneself if more silver or gold jewelry is worn. If gold the two tone if silver the all silver. If a combination the two tone please.

Speaking of watches my watch tool kit came today. It is primarily for changing links in bracelets, replacing leather straps and opening case backs to replace batteries in my quartz watches. I wanted to change a link from one side to the other on my Bulova Precisionist. The salesperson at the jewelry store where I took it removed links out of one side so the deployment clasp is not where it should be. This causes the watch to ride up on my wrist. I placed the bracelet in the pin removal tool and as I began to turn it to remove the pin the piece of **** broke. I already have my return authorization number and it goes back tomorrow. Thanks Amazon.

Hello! I'm a big fan of watches. Ever since I was a teenager, I fell in love with watches and began collecting them. My grandfather had a large collection and he gave it to me. Some of the watches presented to me are now rarities. I didn’t sell them, but kept them in memory of my grandfather.
Now I regularly buy watches for myself, if I have achieved some cherished goal, or if I have a holiday. By the way, look at this site (https://luxurywatchesusa.com/buy-watches/) if you want to know where I buy my watch.
I prefer luxurious watches more than practical ones, because for me a watch is primarily an indicator of status and what you have achieved in your life.
